Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action programme of the Regional Office for Arab States work closely with United Nations, government, and civil society partners to increase the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 and the inclusion of gender in Humanitarian Action. UN Women has been working with governments, UN partners and civil society to support women’s participation and influence at all levels of decision making to prevent and resolve conflicts in the Arab region and to ensure regional coordination on gender inclusion in humanitarian action.

Reporting to Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action Regional Advisor, the hired translator will support in the translation of programme documents from English into Arabic and Arabic into English, as requested. The programme documents include, programmatic documents, such as briefs and talking points, knowledge products and communication products, related to women, peace and security and humanitarian action.

Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities/ Scope of Work

Throughout the duration of the contract, the consultant is expected to perform the following indicative tasks:

  1. Translation and Revision:
    • Translate UN Women knowledge products and communication materials from English to Arabic and vice versa, ensuring accuracy, appropriateness, and adherence to UN Women’s gender-sensitive translation guidelines;
    • Revise translations of texts covering issues related to women’s peace and security and humanitarian action, including those of an exceptionally sensitive, complex, or technical nature;
    • Translate content for the UN Women’s Arabic website.
  2. Terminology and Quality Assurance:
    • Conduct thorough terminological research using UN/UN Women/UN Term websites and other resources to ensure the accuracy and consistency of translations;
    • Take full responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the entire translated document before submission.

Specific assignments will be determined based on programmatic needs.

Under the retainer modality, the supervisor and the consultant will negotiate and agree in advance on the expected number of days necessary to carry out a specific assignment. Each assignment will be considered completed after the supervisor’s approval. Payments will be processed on a monthly basis depending on the number of days worked.

This is a home-based national consultancy in Egypt and no travel is required.

FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong organization and planning skills;
  • Expertise translating documents from English to Arabic and from Arabic to English, including for the UN and other organizations;
  • Expertise on Arabic terminology related to gender equality and women’s empowerment;
  • Attention to detail and ability to work under pressure on multiple deliverables with tight deadlines.

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Certification:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in English literature, Arabic literature, Translation Studies, Linguistics, or any related field is required;
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree;
  • English-Arabic Translation certificate is an asset.

Experience:

  • At least (2) years of proven professional experience in translation from English to Arabic and Arabic to English;
  • Previous experience in translating UN products and terminology is required;
  • Demonstrated experience in working on translations on issues related to women, peace, security and humanitarian action, and women’s empowerment is desirable;
  • Experience in working within the UN system or for an international organization in the field of development, humanitarian aid and gender equality is an asset.

Languages:

– Fluency in both English and Arabic, written and spoken is required.

Education and Certification:

  • Masters degree (or equivalent) in English literature, Arabic literature, Translation Studies, Linguistics, or any related field is required;
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree;
