To provide technical expertise on planning and urban development to Planning Finance and Economy Section and Flagship Programme 1.

Duties and Responsibilities
UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient towns and cities. It is the focal point agency for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat envisions well-planned, well-governed and efficient cities and towns, with adequate housing, infrastructure and universal access to employment and basic services such as water, energy, and sanitation. The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the tools and methodology production center of the UN Habitat that develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through communities of urban practices and is the operational level responsible to undertake technical cooperation projects,such as the construction of water and sanitation facilities, shelter and other work. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section (PFES) is responsible to support urban and territorial planning at all scales including through the development of planning policy, norms and guidelines, urban design and public space design, urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance), and local economic development. Reporting and Communication The Urban Planning Consultant will be hired to collaborate closely with the Flagship Programme 1 team of PFES. He/she will be reporting to the team lead on The Flagship Programme 1. Duties and Responsibilities Under the overall supervision of the Flagship Programme Lead on Inclusive Communities, Thriving Cities, the consultant will be responsible for the following duties: • Provide planning and design inputs to ongoing planning initiatives, including citywide strategies, extension plans and urban transformation plans. • Develop clear planning proposals, drawings, and related reports for partner cities. • Develop critical analysis of existing planning documents and instruments. • Develop and organize participatory, multi-stakeholder processes tailor made for the projects in a specific context. • Provide input to PFES documents and publications. • Draft normative and strategic documents for the Flagship Programme 1 and Our City Plans in collaboration with country offices and teams. • Develop training materials and technical reports for the Flagship Programme 1 and Our City Plans. • Provide technical support to the Planning Finance and Economy Section on communication and outreach activities
Qualifications/special skills
Academic Qualification A bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Urban Planning, or related field that is relevant for sustainable urban development is required. Working Experience Demonstrate at least 3 years of professional experience in the development of urban planning projects and urban regeneration initiatives, in collaboration with multidisciplinary work teams is required. Demonstrate knowledge of the 2030 Agenda, the New Urban Agenda, and/or UN-Habitat language. International experience will be positively taken into account, particularly in the field of international cooperation for territorial and urban development is desirable.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this advertised position fluency in English is required.
