Position Title: Biomedical Technician Mentor

Position Location: Maryland, Harper City

Position Overview:

The Biomedical Technician (BMET) Mentor will reinforce the product lifecycle approach to management of targeted laboratory and hospital equipment in five Southeastern Counties: Grand Gedeh, Sinoe, River Gee, Grand Kru and Maryland. S/he will work in partnership with Partners In Health’s BMET Lead to: facilitate trainings for County BMETs and apprentices on preventive maintenance and repairs for targeted equipment; provide on-the-job mentorship and troubleshooting support at the various County workshops; connect with County BMETs remotely via the regional WhatsApp platform; support the development and revision of SOPs, inventorying and reporting tools. S/he will be supporting the design and delivery of a 20 month, grant funded program, Hub and Spoke: Modeling a New Approach to Biomedical Engineering in the Southeast. S/he will have the required technical knowledge and expertise to support medical facilities across five Southeastern Counties; strengthen BMET skills, leadership and management capacity; improve data-driven decision making and operational planning. This program will enhance regional readiness to respond to COVID-19, other highly infectious diseases and future system shocks.

Responsibilities:

  • Support County BMETs to perform regular diagnosis, calibration, and repair on medical equipment and tools.
  • Work with County BMETs and clinicians to review and develop preventative maintenance policies and procedures to ensure effective and reliable operation of targeted lab and hospital equipment.
  • Coach County BMETs on the use of work order, inventory and reporting tools to ensure timely, accurate and complete reporting
  • Support baseline and endline assessments to determine availability and functionality of targeted hospital in laboratory equipment across the five Southeastern Counties
  • Support quantification, specification and procurement of spare parts for targeted laboratory and hospital equipment in the Southeast
  • Collaborate with County BMETs and to establish a regional work plan
  • Facilitate trainings and regional coordination meetings for County BMETs
  • Ensures safe performance of job duties by following proper safety procedures, taking all necessary safety precautions, anticipating unsafe working conditions, acting accordingly to prevent accidents and promptly reporting accidents and hazardous conditions; participates in and conducts appropriate safety training.

Qualifications:

  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in operations management, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Strong interest in engineering and medicine with a Diploma in Biomedical Clinical Engineering.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Good organizational skills; ability to follow through on projects.
  • Ability to use various mechanical and calibration equipment.
  • Proven leadership/supervisory skills
  • Good written and verbal communications skills
  • Working knowledge of MS Word and Excel.
  • Ability to be on-call for support during non-standard hours
  • Humility and flexibility. Capacity to enter each conversation as a learner and a teacher.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with culturally diverse staff across Ministry units, donors and implementing partners.
  • Excellent ability to manage communication flow and ensure the right people have the right information at the right time.
  • Commitment to health as a human right and social justice required.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Ability to live in West Africa full-time required.
