JOB DESCRIPTION

Researcher – Climate Data and Machine Learning

The Integrated Climate Impacts (ICI) Research Group within the Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program at IIASA is recruiting a researcher with a background in (climate) physics, big data processing and statistical and machine learning. The successful candidate will work with a team of international scientists and contribute to the development of emulator and statistical models for the representation of climate risks.

BACKGROUND

The ECE Program at IIASA is one of the world’s leading global Integrated Assessment Modeling (IAM) teams, and seeks to deepen it’s understanding of physical climate risks, and their societal and economic consequences. Interdisciplinary teams within ECE work towards integrating physical climate risks into their modeling and scenario building activities and this position would critically inform such efforts.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the ECE strategy for deploying AI and machine learning for climate data analysis, emulation, downscaling, and bias correction.
  • Publications peer-reviewed journals and active engagement in dissemination efforts such as scientific conferences and workshops, stakeholder, and policy events.
  • Contribute to ongoing and future projects and related deliverables, reports, stakeholder communication and capacity building activities.

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A master’s degree in natural sciences or a related field.
  • Strong proven programming skills in Python (or comparable).
  • Strong methodological and technical skills with a focus on statistical methods.
  • Proficiency in using AI and machine learning for climate data analysis is an asset.
  • A degree of flexibility and willingness to travel.
  • Fluency in English and excellent presentation skills.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

The successful candidate should be available to take up the position as soon as possible in 2024. We offer an initial fixed-term, full-time employment contract for one year, with the possibility for extension thereafter.

Eligible applicants wishing to work part-time hours may be considered.

The selected candidate could carry out the research as part of a PhD thesis.

Duties will be carried out at the IIASA premises in Laxenburg, near Vienna in Austria (up to 100 days per year home office working within Austria possible).
