Following the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and the establishment of a new government there, some 1.2 million Rwandese Hutus — including elements who had taken part in the genocide — fled to the neighbouring Kivu regions of eastern DRC, formerly Zaïre, an area inhabited by ethnic Tutsis and others. A rebellion began there in 1996, pitting the forces led by Laurent Désiré Kabila against the army of President Mobutu Sese Seko.
Kabila’s forces, aided by Rwanda and Uganda, took the capital city of Kinshasa in 1997 and renamed the country the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
S/he provides basic analysis on political, socio-economic, humanitarian, security, and other regional politically relevant developments.
• Analyse information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press; maintain up-to-date knowledge of events related to political issues in a specified area or subject matter and identifies areas of concern to support the decision-making, early warning, policy development and planning for an integrated UN within the Mission. • Keep abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in the field mission.
• Prepare summaries of updates from a wide variety of sources and draft a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports.
• Prepare talking points, attends meetings, and drafts minutes and notes and other written outputs as required. • Monitor political, socio-economic, humanitarian and security relevant regional developments related to DRC. • Provide input into regional politics, humanitarian, security, and economic efforts and programmes. • Provide other information relevant to assigned area. • Perform other related duties as requested.
The ability to analyze and interpret data in support of decision-making and convey resulting information to management.

Experience working in the UN Common System or comparable international organizations is desirable.
Previous experience in working in eastern DRC is desirable.
This job opening is to identify the most qualified candidate for the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).
Candidates endorsed by the LRP but not selected will be placed on the Associate Political Affairs Officer, (NO-B) roster. The entire assessment process takes an average of six months; all applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application (whether successful or unsuccessful) within 14 days of the conclusion of the process.
