The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of approximately 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

CSIS seeks a full time Associate Fellow to join the China Power Project.

The primary role of the Associate Fellow will be to support the development of content for the China Power website (chinapower.csis.org).

Key research areas include: Chinese foreign and security policy, the People’s Liberation Army, Taiwan, cross-Strait issues, U.S.-China relations, and technology policy. Candidates should be motivated self-starters that enjoy a wide variety of analytical tasks and must possess a background in both international relations and basic data analysis.

The salary band for this role is $65,000-$105,000 commensurate with experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Write and develop content for the ChinaPower website and other publications;
• Conduct qualitative and quantitative research and analysis on issues pertaining to Chinese national power;
• Follow developments in China’s foreign and domestic policy, U.S.-China relations, and cross-Strait relations;
• Lead efforts to curate complex datasets;
• Provide research and writing support to the Program Director and Fellow;
• Support other projects as necessary;
• Assist in writing grant proposals;
• Assist in managing and supervising junior staff and interns.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
• MA in a related field with a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience, or a PhD in a related field;
• Demonstrated knowledge of issues concerning Chinese foreign and security policy and international relations;
• Prior experience in data visualization and/or data-driven storytelling is strongly desired, but not required;
• Advanced proficiency in Mandarin Chinese is required.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets is required;

• Experience with general-purpose statistical software (e.g.

STATA, R, SPSS) is preferred, but not required;

• Familiarity with website development is preferred, but not required;
• Capacity to conceptualize new research topics;
• Demonstrated history of superb writing and editing skills;
• Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities;
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
• Experience with quantitative and qualitative analysis;
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS:

Interns should be able to come into the office at least three times per week.
