JOB SUMMARY

 

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network, working in 177 countries and territories. ln line with its 2021-2025 Country Programme, UNDP Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) focuses on green, sustainable, and inclusive growth, accountable and transparent governance and rule of law, as well as social cohesion. UNDP is fully committed to supporting BiH in fulfilling its Agenda 2030 and the EU priorities.
Through Good Governance Sector, UNDP implements the Joint project: “A more Equitable Society: Promoting Social Cohesion and Diversity in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Dialogue for Future 3 – DFF3)”.

The project is supported by the UN’s Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) established by the UN Secretary General (UNSG) in October 2006. With primary goal of preventing relapse into violent conflict, the PBF provides fast, flexible, and relevant funding to UN entities, governments, regional organizations, multilateral banks, national multi-donor trust funds and civil society organizations.
Following a request by the authorities of BiH in November 2022, the UNSG granted the country eligibility to access funding to support social cohesion priorities of the UNSDCF Agreement and the EU’s 14 key priorities, notably Priority 5.
The DFF3 project is jointly implemented by UNDP (lead agency), UNESCO and UNICEF.

It aims to contribute to strengthening social cohesion, respect for diversity, understanding and trust, especially among young men and women across different communities in BiH, towards a more democratic and peaceful society. The project supports progress towards reconciliation and strengthens positive relationships within and across communities, (i) by creating enabling environment for inclusive dialogue and progressing dialogue on key issues of relevance to sustainable peace; (ii) through the facilitation/provision of quality and inclusive education, as well as education of non-violence and peace, and (iii) through the promotion of cultural diversity and pluralism.

UNDP, UNESCO, and UNICEF will collaborate with government institutions to support youth initiatives relevant for community development within the priority areas of education, culture and environment. The project will foster dialogue, promote civic engagement, and empower institutions and authorities for inter- and cross-community collaboration, encourage socially responsible initiatives and promote positive narratives as well as shared understanding of culture and strengthen sense of common heritage and environment, mobilize civic initiatives around topics of environmental protection, education, and culture, as well as promote intercultural dialogue for peaceful inter-community relations.
DFF3 will be implemented in 10 selected local governments, with certain activities at the country level that have a strong cross-entity and cross-community engagement.

Young men and women as primary beneficiaries will be reached through different channels from local government institutions, schools, youth CSOs, cultural institutions, social media as well as through small grants initiatives. The project will also foster the capacity building and networking of CSOs and partner institutions including educational (ministries of educations, academia, schools, etc.) and cultural institutions as implementing partners.
Project will be implemented from January 2024 until December 2026 in close cooperation and coordination with relevant institutional partners and other actors.

Under the direct supervision of the Joint UN Project Coordinator, and in cooperation with designated project team, the UN Volunteer will will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Support the implementation of the Joint Project (JP) communications and visibility activities
    a.

    Support and ensure continuous communication and visibility of the JP milestones, achievements, results, and outcomes.
    b. Provide support to the conceptualization, preparation and implementation of communications and advocacy efforts, such as events, press conferences, internal/external communications activities, campaigns, and similar tasks.
    c. Assist in media relations and provide support to monitoring and reporting on media coverage of JP’s activities, as well as to overall reporting on communications and visibility.
    d. Draft press releases, briefing materials, information documents, key messages, Op-Eds/blogs, talking points and other relevant communications and advocacy materials.
    e.

    Develop and produce creative and innovative social media content (social media posts, infographics, reels, newsletters, human-interest stories, news articles, multi-media assets, and similar content).
    f. Support awarded CSOs in producing visibility materials in line with the Programme strategies and donor visibility requirements.
    g. Organize initial visibility training with CSOs to present visibility guidelines and rules and procedures regarding DFF3 and donor branding.
    h. Coordinate communication activities of the JP working closely with PBF Communications Analyst including communications, PR and other event related materials and actions including obtaining relevant clearances and inputs to satisfy the required PBF and JP guidelines
    i.

    Translate and disseminate basic documents.

  2. Contribute to the coordination of vendors and partners such as event organization companies, printing and publishing companies, graphic designers, multi-media experts, and editors.
    a. Support and oversee production and postproduction, including editing, of video materials in all formats intended for web video platforms – dissemination via Facebook, YouTube and other designated websites and social media.
    b. Propose creative graphic and technical solutions including creative and innovative ideas for print, web and interactive presentations.
    c.

    Provide support to the design process for reports and presentations to be published by the projects, using a wide range of media.
    d. Establish and maintain archive of photo and video materials.

  3. Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

the field of communications, journalism, advocacy or visibility, at the national and/or international level;
● At least 1 year of experience in social media content production and social media management;
● Experience in the field of event management and design is a strong asset;
● Experience in the field of youth mainstreaming, peacebuilding, or social cohesion is a strong asset;
● Experience working in the UN or other international development organization is an asset;
● Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
● Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
● Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partner; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
● Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
● Strong overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; and office technology equipment;
● Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
● Have affinity with or interest in gender equality issues, women’s rights and volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System;
● Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e.

studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.

Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and the largest urban center with an estimated population of 370.000. The city is situated along the Miljacka river and surrounded by the Dinaric Alps. The city is famous for its traditional religious diversity, with adherents of Islam, Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Judaism coexisting there for centuries. There are no administrative or other restrictions, apart from visa (exceptions possible), on international staff members’ travelling in/within/from the country and in the past two years restrictions imposed by Covid-19 pandemic.

In general, regular medical facilities are available, with two main hospitals and a significant number of small private clinics. General sanitary and hygiene conditions are adequate. Good local banking facilities are available (use of credit cards, ATMs). Communication services (domestic and international) are available on a regular basis. Availability of food, furnishings and other necessities is adequate (various grocery stores and markets with fresh food products, shopping centers, etc). Public transportation is available (tram, bus, trolleybus, taxi).

International airport is 20 minutes’ drive from the UN building in Sarajevo. Public water supply, electricity and sewerage system are in place. Sarajevo offers numerous cultural events open also for international population. The most famous ones are Sarajevo Film Festival, MESS (international theatre festival), Jazz Festival, Sarajevo Winter, Bascarsija’s Nights in summertime, Novi Grad’s Days, Agro-food, International Book Fair, etc. There are number of galleries and museums, sports facilities open for public use and annual international sports competitions.

There are several Cinema multiplexes that regularly offers a rich repertoire of latest films, both blockbusters and masterpieces of independent cinema. The UN designated state of alert for Bosnia and Herzegovina is Security Level 1 which is minimal and lowest security level in the Security Level System for the entire country, including the capital of Sarajevo. The situation in BiH is generally quiet; all international agencies consider threats to their staff to be low at this time.

However, BiH has the same problems as much of Europe, from pickpockets to traffic accidents, so all staff must exercise appropriate personal security awareness and common sense. Bosnia and Herzegovina is still the country with the largest mine contamination problem. Staff are advised not to deviate from well-travelled routes while in the country. See http://www.bhmac.org.
