JOB SUMMARY

Youth engagement is integral to ADB. ADB Strategy 2030, Priority 6 ‘Strengthening Governance and Institutional Capacity’ states that ADB will engage with youth as a vital demographic, especially in lower middle-income countries that retain largely youthful populations.

The purpose of the internship is to better understand the benefits of meaningful youth engagement (MYE) for operations in Water, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and to support ADB in formulating a clear vision with forward-looking goals and an effective MYE strategy with an action plan.

The assignment will involve (i) a mapping exercise of relevant youth and water networks and initiatives in Asia and the Pacific, and its relevance for ADB in terms of objectives, activities and participants; (ii) analysis of meaningful youth engagement strategies of other organisations, such as Multilateral Development Banks, financiers, private sector, etc.; (iii) review and analysis of lessons learned from ADB’s youth activities in the past; (iv) assessment of the benefits and value of meaningful youth engagement for ADBs operations on water; (v) identify potential collaboration areas between Sector Groups Water and Urban Development (SG-WUD), Agriculture, Food, Nature and Rural Development (SG-AFNRD), Human and Social Development (SG-HSD), as well as the Climate Change and Sustainable Development (CCSD) team and the Safeguards team; (vi) Based on activities (i) to (v), support on the formulation of ADBs vision, strategy and action plan on MYE in Water; (vii) present internship results to ADB staff

Activities will include internal and external interviews, workshops, desk studies, reporting.

5. EXPECTED OUTCOMES:

The internship will lead to a greater understanding of existing networks and initiatives in the region and its relevance for MYE in Water operations in ADB, as well as lessons learned from the past and the benefits of MYE for ADBs operations in Water. The internship will result in a MYE in Water vision and strategy involving relevant SGs and other departments in ADB.

Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Students in a Master or PhD program in one or more of the following areas:
Environmental Science, Water Resources Management, Public Policy or Administration, International Development, Social Sciences, Sustainable Development and/or Climate Change Studies would be preferable and advantageous.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• be enrolled in a Master’s- or PhD-level program at a school in one of the ADB member countries, for the whole duration of the internship assignment.
• be engaged in academic study in a field directly related to ADB’s work.
• be a national of one of ADB’s member countries.
• possess an excellent command of English.
• have relevant professional experience.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
Preferable experience:
• Earlier research work, internships or (voluntary) project work in an international environment.

Experience in Asia and/or the Pacific is preferable.
• Prior research experience or coursework related to youth engagement strategies, social inclusion and stakeholder analysis in water-related projects.
• Some experience with project management, in particular ability to manage multiple tasks and organizational skills.
Preferable skills:
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.
• Strong interpersonal and networking skills.
• Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
• Problem-solving abilities.
• Self-motivated and proactive.
