INTERNSHIP TOPIC

Leveraging Alternative Data to Enhance Financial Health

Explore how alternative data can be leveraged to improve financial health, defined as the ability to manage short-term finances, recover from financial shocks, reach future goals, and maintain a sense of financial security. The objective is to explore how new technologies such as geospatial data from satellites and drones and AI can advance improved access to finance, product design, and personalization, manage risk, bring operational efficiency, or even deliver real-time data for decision-making.

SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION
Support with the finance sector project pipeline focusing on enhancing financial health with alternative data.

Alternative data, including geocoding of vegetation like bamboo, geospatial data from satellites and drones, and AI, offers powerful tools to enhance financial health. By providing precise asset valuations, improving access to credit, enabling effective risk management, and fostering investment opportunities, these technologies help individuals and businesses manage short-term finances, recover from financial shocks, achieve future goals, and maintain a sense of security and control over their finances.

Through transparency, real-time insights, and incentives for sustainable practices, alternative data, and AI empower people to build a stable and prosperous financial future.

• Timing: January 2025 onwards

ADB Headquarters, Manila, Philippines

5. EXPECTED OUTCOMES
(i) Orientation and Understanding
– 1.1 Study the basics of financial health and its components, including the implications for digital financial technology
– 1.3 Familiarize with the concept of alternative data and its types (geospatial data, AI, etc.).
(ii) Research and Data Collection
– 2.1 Conduct a literature review on the use of alternative data in finance related to financial health.
– 2.2 Identify and document sources of geospatial data from satellites and drones relevant to financial health.
– 2.3 Research AI applications in financial health enhancement.
– 2.4 Gather case studies where alternative data has been used successfully in finance.
(iii) Data Analysis and Insights
– 3.1 Analyze collected geospatial data and AI outputs to identify patterns and insights.
– 3.2 Evaluate how the geocoding of vegetation like bamboo can influence financial decisions.
– 3.3 Assess the potential of these technologies to improve access to credit and risk management.
– 3.4 Prepare reports on findings with visual aids (charts, graphs, maps).
(iv) Application and Use Case Development
– 4.1 Develop potential use cases for integrating alternative data in financial products, such as affordable and sustainable housing using bamboo as a building material.
– 4.2 Propose methods for utilizing geospatial data for precise asset valuations.
– 4.3 Create scenarios where AI can deliver real-time data for financial decision-making.
– 4.4 Suggest ways to improve operational efficiency using these technologies.
(v) Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
– 5.1 Participate in meetings and discussions with project teams.
– 5.2 Communicate findings and insights to team members and stakeholders.
– 5.3 Gather feedback and refine research and analysis based on inputs.
(vi) Final Reporting and Presentation
– 6.1 Compile a comprehensive final report on the internship findings and recommendations.
– 6.2 Develop a presentation summarizing key insights and proposed solutions.
– 6.3 Present the final findings to the finance sector project team and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• PhD/master’s degree in economics, finance, or related fields

• Proficiency in geodata, geospatial data, and AI is a plus

• Proficiency in development economics, financial sector development in emerging markets, and data analytics.

• Proficient in creating clear visual representations of data to help clients understand quantitative information

• Intern must be enrolled at a school in one of the ADB member countries for the entire duration of the internship.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Proficiency in development economics, financial sector development in emerging markets, and data analytics. Proficiency in geodata, geospatial data, and AI is plus.

• Excellent verbal and written skills in English is a requirement.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work successfully with colleagues and clients
