JOB SUMMARY

Under the overall authority of the Director of the UNESCO Office in Havana and the supervision of the Project Officer for Education, the consultant will collaborate closely with the Education Sector and the International Coordination Unit for UNESCO Associated Schools.

The role is pivotal in integrating and advancing Community Service Learning (CSL) initiatives within the UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet).

This task aligns with UNESCO’s Medium-Term Strategy and the global educational goals (SDG4).

The primary objective of this consultancy is to spearhead and design the implementation and development of CSL programs across ASPnet schools. This is a crucial part of the 2022-2030 strategy ‘Building a Peaceful and Sustainable Future through Transformative Education for Global Citizenship, Sustainable Development, and Intercultural Understanding’, A strategy that significantly contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals.

This will involve direct collaboration with the UNESCO Havana Office for Cuba, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic and ASPnet national coordinators, schools, and other stakeholders to foster transformative education that contributes to sustainable development goals.

The role will mainly focus on global citizenship, intercultural understanding, and sustainable development, critical thematic areas crucial for education’s future.

Requirements

Education

• Advanced university degree (Doctoral or equivalent) in education, social sciences, or other fields.

A first-level university degree in education, social sciences, or other closely related fields, combined with two additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in place of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

• Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in educational program management, with a strong background in community service learning or community engagement initiatives and international experience at a field level will be an asset.

Skills and competencies

• Ability to interact with a wide range of partners and government officials.

• Good interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills, including drafting reports and technical memoranda.

• Good organizational and coordination skills.
• Ability to work as part of a team within a multicultural environment.
• Ability to take initiative and provide quality and timely support and services.
• Discretion and capacity to deal efficiently and tactfully with people of different cultural backgrounds.
• Flexibility to adjust work schedules and priorities.

• Excellent IT skills (MS Word, Excel, Database systems, Outlook, etc.).

Languages

• Excellent knowledge (written and spoken) in English and Spanish.

• Experience working within the UN system or similar international organizations, particularly in CSL educational projects.

Responsibilities

 

• ASPnet Community Service Learning Framework Development: Establish the theoretical foundations of Community Service Learning within the ASPnet.

This framework will be aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing Goal 7 of SDG 4 and integrating UNESCO’s global educational transformation agenda. It will serve as the structural backbone of all ASPnet CSL activities, ensuring they are grounded in solid academic principles and designed to meet global development objectives.

• Evaluation and Impact Assessment Model: Design and implement a comprehensive evaluation framework to assess Youth Civic Engagement and Inclusivity across all ASPnet CSL initiatives.

This model will facilitate assessments to gauge both immediate impacts and long-term outcomes, thereby providing essential data to refine and continuously optimize CSL activities within ASPnet.

• Implementation Guidelines for ASPnet CSL Projects: Develop and disseminate detailed operational guidelines to aid in the practical application of the ASPnet CSL framework.

These guidelines will be crafted explicitly for educators and implementers and encompass various methodologies, pedagogical exercises, and vital resources. This will ensure consistent and effective delivery of CSL activities across diverse educational settings and community contexts.

• Strategic Stakeholder Engagement: This role will forge and deepen collaborations with key stakeholders, including the UNESCO Havana Office for Cuba, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, ASPnet national coordinators, schools, other stakeholders, national authorities, educational institutions, NGOs, and community groups.

It will focus on leveraging these relationships to broaden and enhance the reach and impact of ASPnet CSL initiatives within national education systems.

• Advocacy for Community Service Learning: Actively promote CSL practices within the ASPnet and to external audiences through strategic publications, international conferences, and influential policy dialogues.

This will help advocate for adopting and scaling CSL methodologies, extending their influence beyond the immediate network.
