JOB DESCRIPTION

Org. Setting and Reporting
The post is located in the Water Unit of the Transboundary Cooperation section of the Environment Division (ENV) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) based in Geneva, Switzerland. The broad aim of UNECE’s environment activities is to safeguard the environment and human health, and to promote sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda. This position is temporarily available through 31 March 2025. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Chief, Transboundary Cooperation Section, and the direct supervision of the Secretary to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention), the incumbent will perform the following functions: – Assisting in the preparation for, servicing and follow-up of the tenth session of the Meeting of the Parties of the Water Convention (October 2024), including communication with participants, preparation of the high-level segment, organization of back-to-back meetings and side-events, facilitation of youth participation, maintenance of web-page, follow-up correspondence and documentation; – Assisting in the preparation of workshops to facilitate raising awareness about the Water Convention and its global opening and support national processes on accession, in particular in Latin America and the Caribbean region; – Providing support to activities on the Sustainable Development Goals indicator 6.5.2 reporting, in particular the establishment of online reporting system and database; – Drafting background documents, reports and minutes of meetings, discussion papers, studies, publications and other documentation; – Undertaking various administrative tasks including donor correspondence and financial reports; – Providing support to the Division and other parts of the Organization on substantive, administrative and cross-cutting issues; – Assisting in the process of contracting consultants, individual contractors and other experts in preparation of relevant documents and research studies through drafting terms of reference; – Establishing and maintaining contacts with national focal points and other relevant contacts, – Drafting correspondence and providing information to delegations, as required; – Liaising with non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations, youth organizations and the private sector; – Supporting the awareness-raising and capacity-building activities to facilitate effective implementation of the Convention, including through cooperation with partner organizations, and maintaining relevant pages of the Convention’s website.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in environmental management, international relations, policy, governance, public administration, statistics or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

Minimum of two years of progressively responsible professional experience in environmental affairs at international level is required.

A minimum of one year of experience in environmental statistics and designing environmental statistical databases is required.

Experience in organizing intergovernmental meetings is desirable. Experience in water management matters is desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and Spanish is required.
