JOB DESCRIPTION

 

To address this, and in the spirit of regional and international normative frameworks above, the Ministry of Women Affairs, Small , Medium Enterprise, Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (UN Women) has initiated a joint initiative to reengage stakeholders towards the enactment of a gender equality law .

Purpose: Key institutions strengthened to formulate, review, and implement laws and policies to increase women’s representation and participation in politics and decision making

Objective: contribute to legislative and policy reforms in accordance with the gender equality and women’s rights provisions in the Constitution, and develop an accountability mechanism for monitoring national, regional, and international gender commitments.

Proposed Activities will include:

  1. Support legislative efforts to lobby for a Gender Equality Bill in Parliament.
  2. Increase awareness and public support of the Gender Equality Bill through partnerships with Women’s Rights Organizations (WROs) and the media.

The assignment is a joint initiative of Ministry of Women Affairs, Small , Medium Enterprise, Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (UN Women) and Women Rights Organisations .

The Consultant is expected to report to the UN Women Governance Specialist who will be the point of contact on the contract and payment issues.

Consultant’s Workplace and Official Travel

The assignment is home-based.

As part of this assignment, there will be local travel expected of the consultant. UN Women will cover travel and accommodation costs beyond commuting distance from the consultant’s usual place of residence for UN Women authorized travel as per the UN Women standard travel guidelines.

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Certification:

• Master’s degree or equivalent in Social Sciences, Law or a related field is required.

• A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the field of social science / gender, women’s rights, legal and policy reform is required.
  • Experience in the field of law and policy analysis (local or general) is a strong asset.
  • Experience working with government, and Women Rights Organizations is a strong asset
  • Strong experience and knowledge about local national and international law and engaging with legislative functionaries.
  • Excellent analytical skills with strong drive for results and capacity to work independently.
  • Excellent English communication and writing skills; (Samples of previous work will be required.)
  • Previous experience with the United Nations or similar organizations in this or a related field would be considered an asset.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of any other UN official language is an asset.
