JOB DESCRIPTION

Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is based Bangkok, Thailand and will support the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar (OSESG-M). Under the overall direction of the Head of Office, the incumbent will support the Front office achieve effective implementation of the Secretary-General’s good offices General Assembly mandate on Myanmar.
Responsibilities
Under the overall direction of the Head of Office, the Associate Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Tracks, researches and analyzes information on developments and activities in and on Myanmar; gathers information from diverse national and local media sources in English and Burmese language and helps to assess news value and other potential impact. • Drafts/compiles customized types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.), of information communications products on Myanmar to include press releases, media packets, reports, and analysis of social media , websites, etc. • Prepares, based on official UN documentation and other sources, initials translation/interpretation of Burmese articles/sources to English, for inclusion in the Office’s regular political reports, briefings, statements, and communications products. • Identifies, implements and manages information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the specific situation, topic and target audience. • Maintains strategic partnerships with key contacts/constituencies in and on Myanmar, as well as with relevant Information Officers/Specialists throughout the UN, other international organizations, governments, civil society, media and academia, and identifies opportunities to facilitate effective communication efforts. • Organizes or participates in the organization of conferences, seminar, press briefings, interviews, etc.; prepares briefing materials for senior officials prior to their participation in such events. • Responds to a variety of enquiries and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence. • Contributes to the collection and analysis and translation of data as well as identification of trends or patterns; provides draft insights through data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Performs other related duties as assigned

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field is required. A relevant first-level university degree in the above fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is an advantage.

Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. Experience working in or on Myanmar, or the region, is required. Experience working in a field setting is required. Experience in international inter-agency coordination is desirable. Experience in supporting high-level officials is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English and Burmese is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

This is a temporary position and will initially be available until 31 March 2025. If selected, an internal candidate will be on temporary assignment to the post; an external candidate will initially be offered a temporary appointment.
