For every child, a future

UNICEF has been present in Uruguay since 1992. Since then, it has provided technical cooperation and financial assistance to the Government and to the society in different areas to promote the rights of children and adolescents and generate opportunities for all of them to achieve the full development of their abilities. UNICEF work is based on a cooperation program that is agreed with the government every five years. A new cooperation program between UNICEF and Uruguay’s Government started in March 2021.

UNICEF provides technical assistance and advice for monitoring, supporting and promoting children’s rights on the following areas within the country:

  • Support policies to reduce levels of poverty affecting children with special focus on early child development.
  • Prevention of non-communicable diseases on children under five.
  • Improve graduation rates in upper secondary education.
  • Guarantee the access of children with disabilities to inclusive education.
  • Reduce the number of children and adolescents living in institutional care.
  • Prevention of violence against girls and boys.
  • Empower adolescents to participate in decision making processes.
  • Improve alternatives to deprivation of liberty for adolescents in conflict with the law.
  • Raise awareness about child rights among Uruguay’s general public and the engagement of the private sector, civil society organizations (CSOs) and academic institutions in promoting, protecting and monitoring child rights.

How can you make a difference?

Over the last years, Uruguay Country Office (UCO) has experienced a sustained growth in fundraising, which is mainly explained by the results obtained in the Individual Giving channel, in addition to a successful Partnership’s Engagement Strategy.

The Country Office has set ambitious goals in the Private Sector Plan (PSP) in terms of revenue growth, RR and OR allocation, along with a diversified marketing strategy that leads to an increase in the number of pledge donors. A strong management and leadership of a Fundraising Manager is required to successfully develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising and marketing strategy to sustain growth and ensure sustainability.

Under the supervision of the Uruguay Country Office Representative P-5, the Fundraising Manager NO-C will envision and guide the implementation of the resource mobilization strategy, emphasizing global core resources, and seize new opportunities that contribute to Uruguay’s country programme and global PFP priorities. This post will contribute with the organization´s goals as it will lead fundraising growth based in a sustainable, not earmarked and risk averse strategy, that will cover the financial needs of UCO’s programme, but also make sustainable contributions to promote children rights beyond borders through Regular Resources, LACRO’s Regional Thematic Fund and Emergencies. The incumbent will also guide a Corporate Engagement plan to influence the Private Sector in favour of Child Rights and Business Principles, develop a strategy for mobilizing donors for Children’s Rights and lead the relationship with the Corporate Council, celebrities, and the Media.

Key Accountabilities and Duties & Tasks

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

 

Define challenging but realistic fundraising goals and strategy, develop the annual work plan and budget to increase sustainable sources of income in a cost effective way, especially not earmarked and unrestricted resources to cover UCO needs (OR programme budget and fundraising costs) and other UNICEF priorities (global regular resources, Regional Thematic Fund and emergencies)

  • Development of the fundraising strategy and Annual Workplan and budget according to the organization guidelines and regulations.
  • Establish corporate and individual fundraising KPIs
  • Agree with RO RSC and PFP Geneva the allocation of Investment Funds.

Effective development and management of implementation plans, ensuring the fulfilment of the UCO´s corporate and individual fundraising objectives and KPI´s

  • Ensure the timely implementation of the PFP workplan.
  • Periodically monitor income and expenditure against targets, approved budget and workplan, ensuring that the necessary corrective measures are applied.
  • Periodically monitor KPIs against targets, ensuring that reports, KPIs and documents are prepared and updated as required.
  • Monitor administrative work and processes supporting the fundraising operation to ensure successful workplan implementation.

Mobilize other resources and capacities beyond fundraising

  • In coordination with Programme and Communication divisions, develop UCO’s Corporate Engagement plan to influence the Private Sector in favour of children in line with the Child Rights and Business Principles.
  • Manages the relation with the Corporate Council, local celebrities, and the Media in order to mobilize them to support UNICEF work in the country.

 

Mobilize donors for children´s rights and promote support to UNICEF´s work in the country and beyond in relevant issues in collaboration with Programme and Communication divisions.

  • In coordination with the Communication division, develop and use fundraising content for donors and special events to mobilize donors for children´s rights and to promote support to UNICEF´s work in the country and globally.
  • Supervise the production of informative and advocacy materials on children’s rights for donors and fundraising campaigns.
  • Manage the relationship with UNICEF´s Business Corporate Council and the overall corporate sector in favour of children´s rights.

Evaluation and negotiation of new and/or innovative fundraisings activities to develop Individual Giving’s products portfolio

  • Seeks new opportunities for advancing in fundraising and market penetration.
  • Lead negotiations and contribute with the evaluation of new fundraising proposals.
  • Foresee changes in external and internal environment to seize fundraising opportunities and reduce potential risks.

 Effective management and leadership of the Fundraising division

  • Provide the Fundraising division’s staff with clear direction, objectives and expectations aligned with organizational strategies and policies.
  • Support staff wellbeing and workplace culture, and maintain a secure work environment of transparency, accountability and respect that complies with UNICEF’s zero tolerance commitment against all forms of harassment and abuse and with United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) provisions.
  • Manage performance of staff under supervision, having regular performance discussions, identifying learning goals and ensuring a supportive environment for personal and professional development.
  • Promote a “continuous improvement” culture within the Fundraising team, ensuring that staff members are aware of individual and collective responsibilities and objectives.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to review KPIs and progress in the implementation of annual workplans, to identify opportunities, issues and gaps, and to agree on action plans.

Effective coordination and collaboration with other Country Office divisions and key stakeholders

  • As a member of the Country Management Team (CMT), advise and support UCO’s Representative in planning, implementing, and monitoring UNICEF’s actions in the country, to ensure the achievement of results and proper risk management,
  • Ensure strong and collaborative relationships between the Fundraising division and key stakeholders: LAC Regional Office, PFP Geneva, other CO divisions, among others.
  • Strengthen networks with Fundraising teams across UNICEF to leverage the fundraising operation and support other Country Offices in the development of their fundraising strategies as required.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Minimum requirements:

  • Education: An advanced university degree (Master´s degree or equivalent) in one of the following fields is required: Business Administration, Economics, Marketing, Communications, Fundraising, Management or another relevant technical field.  
  • Work Experience: A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in fundraising, with progressively increasing responsibilities. Previous managerial experience is essential.
  • Language Requirements: Fluency in Spanish and English is required.

Desirables:

  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency.
  • Experience in, and knowledge of the country context is an asset.
  • Familiarity with the private sector is an asset.
