JOB DESCRIPTION

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Centre, is seeking a skilled and innovative Geospatial Hydrologist to join its team in Accra, Ghana.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to advancing IWMI’s water accounting and resource assessment tools across Africa. The successful candidate will play a critical role in developing and implementing geospatial hydrology and remote sensing methodologies to enhance water management and productivity.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Enhance and maintain geospatial hydrological databases and models for detailed water resource assessments across various scales.
  • Develop and refine hydrological models and tools, including the Digital Innovations for a Water Secure Africa (DIWASA) framework and Scale Invariant Water Accounting Plus (SIWA+), integrating new data from sources such as the Open Data Cube (ODC) and WaPOR.
  • Utilize remote sensing data (e.g., satellite rainfall, evapotranspiration, soil moisture) to analyze and model water availability and usage, including agricultural water demands.
  • Develop Python, R, or Google Earth Engine-based algorithms and scripts for processing, analyzing, and visualizing geospatial data.
  • Produce comprehensive reports, visualizations, and strategic recommendations to support water management policies and enhance agricultural productivity.
  • Support the development of tools for agricultural water and irrigation security and contribute to the assessment of water use in rainfed and irrigated systems.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to implement innovative approaches for improved water management.
  • Engage in stakeholder interactions, workshop planning, and training to promote effective use of geospatial tools and data.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

Essential,

  • Master’s degree or PhD in spatial hydrology, remote sensing, environmental engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 05 years post-MSc or 03 years post-PhD experience in hydrology, geospatial analyses, or a related field.
  • Experience with large spatial data sets, remote sensing data, and scripting in Python, R, or Google Earth Engine.
  • Proficiency in advanced spatial analysis, GIS tools, and hydrological modeling.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Essential,

  • Strong research skills in geospatial hydrology and hydro-climatology, with experience in water/agricultural sectors.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a proactive and self-motivated attitude.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with creative and innovative thinking.
  • Willingness to travel and a commitment to continuous learning.
  • Excellent oral and written language skills in English, including effective listening and strong verbal and written communication abilities.

Desirable,

  • Experience with geospatial research in developing countries, particularly in West Africa.
  • Familiarity with calculating indices for land and water change detection.
  • Proficiency in additional major languages spoken in Ghana or West Africa.

This is a nationally recruited position and only Ghanaian nationals will be considered. The duration of the contract will initially be for a period of three years with the possibility of extension.
