JOB DESCRIPTION

Call for two consultants to conduct food price monitoring in the East Africa region for the Food Security Portal

The Food Security Portal (FSP), facilitated by IFPRI, aims to provide improved food security for the world’s poor and increased resilience of global food systems against food and financial crisis. The project brings together international, regional, and country-level data, news, and research aimed at meeting countries’ immediate food security needs, as well as building long-term global food security. The FSP is designed to pool information in structured ways to ensure data quality, timeliness, and relevance, as well as the opportunity for collaboration among policymakers, development professionals, and researchers. The Food Security Portal (FSP), together with the Africa South of the Sahara Food Security Portal (FSP-SSA) sub-portals, available in English and in French, feature global food price data and price volatility measurements for major agricultural commodities. The FSP also serves as repository for domestic food price data in selected countries.

Since monitoring food prices in local markets has become even more important in light of the global pandemic and other conflicts affecting global and national food markets, the FSP launched the East Africa Commodity Price Reports series and the Kenya Commodity Price reports series. The FSP seeks qualified consultants or organizations from East Africa to continue conducting monthly analyses of the evolution of daily/weekly prices of the key food commodities. The price monitoring includes analysis of price movements in association with local market conditions, including local drivers of supply and demand, seasonality, and any potential impacts of ongoing conflicts. Analyses may be based on primary data collection or other national sources of data, in addition to the East African Grain Council’s Regional Agricultural Trade Intelligence Network (RATIN) for wholesale and retail price data on several agricultural commodities.

Using this call for applications, the FSP will identify two individual consultants or organization to gather/compile data, provide analysis, and produce a monthly report on:

  • Daily/weekly price data for one or two commodities across the eastern African region,

and one to two individual consultants or organizations to gather/compile data, provide analysis, and produce a monthly report on:
