Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The interns will work on projects of the Sustainable Consumption and Production Unit, of the Paris-based Economy Division. The interns will be involved in implementing activities related to the work in Ecolabelling & Consumer Information. The team’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition towards more Sustainable Consumption and Production policies and practices by increasing the availability of reliable information to guide consumers’ decision-making. The objective is to support the behavioral change of producers and consumers towards long-term sustainability, in the light of the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, thus reducing pressure on the environment whilst fostering social and economic development. The “Sustainability in the Textile Value Chain Promoting Ecolabel and Sustainable Public Procurement in China” project is a small-scale initiative spanning one and a half years, from 2024 to 2026. It’s funded by UNEP and is contributing to the broader objectives of the project “Greening Supply and Demand: Advancing Eco-Labels and Sustainable Public Procurement for Climate and Biodiversity Protection (EcoAdvance)”. The primary goal is to foster more sustainable consumption and production patterns by leveraging ecolabeling and sustainable public procurement policies. Under the overall supervision of the Head, Sustainable Consumption and Production Unit and the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officers the intern will: • Assist the Consumer information team with the implementation of the project “Eco-Advance – Greening supply and demand: Advancing Eco-Labels and Sustainable Public Procurement for climate and biodiversity protection (Eco-Advance)”, preparing documents and liaising with contacts from partner organizations or project countries. • Support regarding outreach, preparation of the agenda as well as logistical and technical assistance during webinars and conferences. This includes: –> Preparing PowerPoint –> Support in drafting concept and briefing notes, etc. • Assist with communication efforts including support for presentations, articles, newsletter, website content development, and general awareness raising materials. • Assist with research and data collection on themes related to Consumer Information, Eco labeling, Product Life extension, Consumer information and Climate Change as well as Consumer information and Biodiversity • Draft documents (policy brief, concept notes, articles) and review reports • Assist with cross-unit collaboration opportunities • Assist in other tasks associated with the implementation of the Consumer Information team’s projects, as needed and directed by supervising staff member.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Additional job questions: 1. Good knowledge of standard software applications, specifically MS Excel and PowerPoint desirable. 2. Experience in doing research and strong interest to work on consumer information/ecolabeling issues 3. Skills in developing communication materials (eg. social media cards) and in preparing webinars 4. Interest in the work the UN and willingness to work in a multicultural environment
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English and Chinese required. Knowledge of Spanish is desirable.
