The selection process will be conducted with the objective of filling one vacant position. However, applicants will also be included in a reserve list of rostered candidates for future vacant positions in nuclear safety licensing and safety oversight. The reserve list initially remains valid for two years, with the possibility of extension at the Director General’s discretion.

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity at the heart of an ambitious fusion energy project? Join us as a Nuclear Safety Integration Section leader where you will:

  • Oversee a team of nuclear safety engineers dedicated to defining and implementing the necessary requirements to ensure the protection of individuals and the environment.
  • Develop a comprehensive safety demonstration that address the risks associated with both routine operations and hypothetical accidental scenarios, focusing on their potential impact on nuclear safety functions, individuals, and the environment.
  • Coordinate the preparation of licensing files for the ITER fusion facility and actively engage in the various safety milestones of ITER, including those related to licensing.
  • Foster a strong culture of transparency and nuclear safety within the ITER Organization and its Domestic Agencies, emphasizing the importance of nuclear safety in all aspects of the organization’s operations.

You will be leading the Nuclear Safety Integration team, focused on the engineering of safety and environmental provisions needed for ensuring the safety of ITER fusion facility, licensed as a nuclear facility. The section is embedded in the Central Integration Division, whose mission is to act as a general architect by integrating physical, function and safety requirements for the benefits of the ITER fusion objectives, and by participating to the licensing process of ITER facility.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Leads the section performing licensing technical coordination as well as nuclear safety, radiation protection and environment engineering, and provides technical leadership in those topics, integrating the safety engineering among all ITER design, construction, commissioning and operation requirements;
  • Ensures compliance with the French regulatory framework and international safety standards, meeting the agreed schedule for responses to the regulators’ demands in a satisfactory manner;
  • Proposes safety engineering solutions optimized for fusion technology, prepares convincing cases and follows up with the French regulatory framework;
  • Leads and coordinates the technical licensing files (e.g. safety reports, impact study) ensuring their agreement by French Safety Authorities with regards to the relevant aspects of the safety case, whilst maintaining safety, quality, schedule and cost requirements in line with the Project Baseline.
  • Maintains trustworthy, up-to-date information out of the project management tools, and providing adequate reports to the hierarchical management line.

  • Supports the management in matters related to all safety engineering or licensing topics and ensures an effective communication to all stakeholders;
  • Establishes and coordinates in close collaboration with the Construction Project and Systems Engineering units, the evolution of defined requirements and the design for the systems needed to ensure a high level of safety and low environmental impact with regards to French and national safety standards; such as: shielding, confinement, fire protection, explosion prevention, detritiation, effluent/waste, support systems;
  • Coordinates the R&D associated to the safety risks of a fusion facility;
  • Develops and maintains methodologies and knowledge of safety & regulatory requirements and provides training in the nuclear safety risks via a diffusion of the nuclear safety culture to all stakeholders.

You will interact with the nuclear safety regulator and its technical support for technical matters, including but not limited to, the safety report and the impact study.

This position will require the ability to obtain a French security clearance.

Experience & Profile

  • Essential competencies and experience:
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in working on nuclear safety tasks such as safety demonstrations for projects within a Nuclear Safety regulatory environment;
  • Team management: providing technical leadership, motivating and ensuring development of competencies, in a project environment;
  • Interacting with high level stakeholders, safety authorities and experts in different safety disciplines;
  • Implementing and adapting nuclear safety, radiation protection and environment codes & standards and regulations;
  • Implementing safety engineering methods to deliver fit-for-purpose solutions;
  • Encouraging a questioning attitude towards nuclear safety issues, adopting a prudent approach to safety queries, and fostering open communication and attentive listening to diverse perspectives.
  • Desirable competencies and experience:
  • Practical, international experience and global perspective in approaching issues to define solutions;
  • Knowledge of French and European regulations, as well as ISO and IAEA standards on nuclear safety and their application to facilities handling radioactive materials (including fusion facilities);
  • Experience in safety licensing oversight.
  • Fluency in French is considered advantageous, in order to interact efficiently with the French safety authorities.
  • Education:
    • Essential: Master’s degree or equivalent in Engineering or equivalent in the nuclear field or other relevant discipline associated with nuclear safety, radiation protection and environment impact;
    • The required education degree may be substituted by extensive professional experience involving similar work responsibilities and/or additional training certificates in relevant domains.

  • Knowledge of these competencies may be acquired through on-board training at basic understanding level for all ITER staff members;
  • Implements the technical control of the Protection Important Activities, as well as their propagation to the entire supply chain;
  • May be requested to perform other duties in support of the project as defined by your line manager, and when relevant upon the request of the matrix manager;
  • May be requested to work outside the ITER Organization reference working hours, including nights, weekends and public holidays, due to business needs – this may include on-call, shift work, etc.
  • May be requested to be part of any of the project/construction teams and to perform other duties in support of the project;
  • For staff expected to perform on-call, shift hours, or other work outside ITER Organization reference working hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, the possession of a driving license valid in France is required. no commuting vehicle will be provided by the ITER Organization.
  • Informs management of any important and urgent issues that cannot be handled by line or matrix management and that may jeopardize the achievement of the Project’s objectives;
