Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational Setting UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP, Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The overall supervision of this consultancy will be under Programme Management Officer, Ecosystems Division. Background The Go-Blue Project is a partnership between the European Union (EU) and the Government of Kenya to advance the Blue Economy agenda across six counties in Kenya’s coastal region. The implementing partners include four-member states agencies from Germany, Italy, Portugal and France, and two UN Agencies (United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat and United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP), with each implementing specific components of the Project in collaboration with the coastal counties and the Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani (JKP) Secretariat and relevant national government Ministries. UN-Habitat and UNEP are jointly implementing the main environmental component Result Area 2: Connecting People, Cities and the Ocean: Innovative Land-Sea Planning and Management for a Sustainable and Resilient Kenyan Coast. Under this component, UN-Habitat and UNEP are focusing on Innovative Integrated, Ecosystem-based Land-Sea Planning and Management for a Sustainable and Resilient Kenyan Coast. The core goal is to enable integrated land-sea planning, including demonstration pilot projects and compilation of relevant data in Kenya’s six coastal Counties. This includes addressing key socio-economic and environmental drivers and challenges to secure marine and coastal ecosystem services through planning, capacity building and pilot activities across the six coastal Counties. The project has four (4) specific outcomes: 1. Planning authorities to use information generated from the project in demonstration exercises on integrated, sustainable land-sea spatial planning and management, 2. JKP counties and coastal locations apply new frameworks and approaches in integrated land-sea planning and management, 3. Pilot interventions resulting in protection of coastal ecosystems, improved waste management, climate change and blue job creation in target areas, 4. Good practices and knowledge from integrated land-sea planning are applied by county governments, local communities, and private sectors in JKP region. Scope of Work The consultant will be hired under UNEP’s terms of contract and under the overall guidance and supervision of the Go Blue Project Manager and the Innovation and Communications Officer. UNEP shall provide the necessary support to the consultant in order to execute the assignment during the duration of the consultancy. These will include travel arrangements, access to relevant documents and contacts and access to key people relevant to the execution of this assignment. Specific duties and responsibilities for this consultancy include: · Familiarization with relevant materials pertaining to the pilot activities under the Go Blue project; · Review and build up on the existing footage and pictures captured; · Co-develop the overall concept and scenario, script and storyboard for the audio-visual documentation; · Produce the project film and related photography footage, including conducting interviews with relevant stakeholders; · Develop a script and create text for voice-over narration; · Produce and finalise the audio-visual documentation in close consultation with the respective officers in charge; Tasks to be undertaken by the consultant. Working in close collaboration with the Project Manager and the Innovation and Communications Officer, staff members from both UNEP and UN-Habitat, the Consultant will: I. Collaborate closely with the project team to co-develop the overall concept, including the scenario script and storyboard, ensuring a coherent narrative for the documentary. II. Capture high-quality 4K footage, encompassing B-roll, aerial shots, and interviews, by utilizing state-of-the-art filming equipment to achieve professional visual standards. III. Produce and edit a comprehensive set of photographs, including detailed portraits of interviewees and visually engaging images of project sites. IV. Provide all raw footage and photographs, ensuring secure storage through comprehensive backups on hard drives for future accessibility. V. Prepare initial rough cuts of the documentary and integrate up to three rounds of feedback, refining the content to meet project specifications. VI. Deliver the finalized project documentary, ensuring all elements align with UNEP and UN-Habitat’s quality and branding standards. VII. Create and edit social media clips, featuring text-based messaging, designed to effectively engage online audiences and promote project outcomes as per UNEP and UN-Habitat specifications and templates.
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced university degree (Masters) in communication studies, journalism, international relations, film-making, digital production, or related fields is required. Must possess advanced technical expertise in camera operation, including proficiency with gimbals, hand-held setups, and tripods. Should be skilled in sound design during recordings and capable of researching and selecting appropriate music for filmed outputs. Proficiency in video editing software, such as DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Final Cut Pro, is desirable. At least 5 years of work experience in film production in Kenya with a strong portfolio showcasing your experience working on projects related to environmental communication, urbanization and sustainable development is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this consultancy, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in other UN languages is an added advantage
Additional Information
Must possess advanced filming equipment, including cameras capable of shooting 4K and UHD, with the ability to film interviews from multiple angles. Possess a drone capable of capturing 4K footage, as well as a photo camera with a minimum resolution of 40MP, capable of shooting in both JPG and RAW formats, with options for rendering images suitable for print and online use. Be equipped with comprehensive supporting video equipment, including on-person microphones, ambient sound microphones with backups, tripods, lighting equipment, ND filters for daytime filming, reflectors, and a range of camera lenses to capture various angles. A waterproof bag for equipment protection and at least two external hard drives for daily backups are also required
