Result of Service The consultant will provide technical advice and support the execution of activities related to public space. The Public Space and Biodiversity consultant will collaborate closely with the Global Public Space Programme of UNHabitat and local project teams, academia, UN Agencies representatives, Government officials, media, multilateral and bilateral donors and civil society.

Duties and Responsibilities
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UNHabitat, is the United Nations agency for Human Settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities to provide adequate shelter for all. The position is in the Planning, Finance & Economy Section of the Urban Practices Branch (UPwith the Global Solutions Division in Nairobi. The Global Solutions Division (GSis responsible for providing programmatic direction for UNHabitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards the effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UNHabitat. It provides substantive training to staff members and supports the capacity development of Member States and partners. The Urban Practices Branch (UPis the tools and methodology production and skills centre of UNHabitat that develops normative guidance and cuttingedge tools through communities of urban practice. It provides technical and policy advice approaches and methodologies to MCOs/CO, government and partners and mainstreams them throughout the programme portfolio. It also ensures that the crosscutting area of safety and the social inclusion issues of human rights; gender; children, youth and older persons; and disability are developed and mainstreamed across the Agency. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section coordinates the Agency’s substantive, normative and operational work on various dimensions of planning, finance and economy. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section aims to develop, document, pilot/test and disseminate planning policies, norms, standards, tools, methodologies, regulatory frameworks, operating procedures and practices at global, regional, national and subnational levels. UNHabitat’s Global Public Space Programme works with national and local governments to improve public spaces globally. The objectives of the Programme are: To promote public space as an important element for creating sustainable cities, for improving the quality of life of urban citizens, and as a key lever in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, continuing the dialogue following Habitat III and for monitoring the implementation of the SDG 1; To consolidate knowledge, good approaches, tools and methodologies on public space and make these accessible, particularly to local government partners; To engage the broader network of partners and public space practitioners in the global promotion of good policies and practice on public space; To demonstrate, through pilot projects and in partnership with cities, the importance of public spaces in achieving social, economic, environmental and other benefits to cities. Supervision The consultant will be part of, and work with the Planning, Finance and Economy Section located in the Urban Practices Branch of UNHabitat, reporting to the Global Public Space Programme Manager. Responsibilities The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks: • Support the geoanalysis work under the San Jose Green Public Space AssessmentBiodiversity Project. • Coordinate and conduct Trainings to implementing partners and local teams liaising with academia, local governments and relevant stakeholders. • Participate and engage in workshops and meetings related to the project. • Produce technical and normative outputs, including the spatial strategy, situational analysis reports, public space strategies, maps, plans, and guidelines for green areas and associated public spaces. • Support preparation of maps, graphics and statistics through collection, compilation, spatialisation, analysis and interpretation of spatial data. • Attend meetings and events promoted by UNHabitat and partners to strengthen the Programme’s presence. • Be responsible for maintaining an organised and accessible information database related to the project. • Provide recommendations for scaling up the methodology/tool at the global level.
Qualifications/special skills
Education Recognized 1st level degree in Geography, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Studies is required. Experience • At least two (2) years of experience working in urban planning and design with knowledge in geospatial analysis, mapping and cartography using GIS and CAD tools is required. • Experience and knowledge of data gathering, digitizing, cleaning, visualization, analysis, management and report production is desired.
Languages
Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
