Department

The ILO Department of Statistics serves as the United Nations’ focal point for labour statistics and is responsible for compiling and disseminating timely statistics on the world of work. The Department develops international standards to improve the measurement of labour issues and enhance global comparability. It supports Member States in developing and improving their labour statistics through capacity building, training, and direct technical assistance. Additionally, the Department coordinates statistical activities and ensures the quality control of statistical processes within the ILO.

Within the Department, the internship will be placed with the Knowledge Management & Solutions Unit. The Unit is responsible for providing technical assistance in data management and promoting the adoption of international statistical standards such as .Stat, CSPro, GSBPM, GSIM, SDMX, DDI, and F.A.I.R., fostering best practices among constituents. The unit supports the implementation of national and regional Labour Market Information Systems (LMIby offering project management, training, tools, and ongoing technical assistance. It also maintains, develops, and tests applications and processes for ILOSTAT’s data collection and backoffice management systems. Lastly, the unit pilots on developing, experimenting with, and implementing innovative tools including AI, to improve data management practices, staying uptodate with the latest technological trends to ensure continuous innovation and enhanced support for its stakeholders.

Learning areas

As an intern, you will engage in tasks that involve AI implementation, reinforcement learning, and labour statistics, as well as data integration and harmonization for labour market intelligence in the implementation of LMIS.
You will gain experience working with specialists across various units within the department and different ILO regions. You will provide key support in developing an AIdriven labour market intelligence solution capable of generating summaries, report templates, charts, and dashboards based on labour market indicators.
The following tasks are expected during the internship:
● Contribute to the development of a natural language search tool for querying labour statistics.
● Review, improve and develop deep learning models for the ISCO autocoding, and the detection of new emerging jobs.
● Draft an AI implementation guide and recommendations for the Department.
● Build a prototype labour market intelligence reporting solution based on indicators collected from LMIS.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Experience

Any relevant work experience and knowledge of deep learning, AI and national language processing would be an advantage

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HR, hiring departments will shortlist applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, email, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend/Financial compensations:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundatio. If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.

Qualified candidates from nonand underrepresented countries may be eligible for a special fund that provides financial assistance for roundtrip airfare (economy clasin addition to the stipend.
