Department Description

The intern will be working with the Gender in Employment Group of the Employment, Labour Markets and Youth Branch (EMPLAwithin the Employment Policy Department (EMPLOYMEN, under the supervision of the Gender in Employment Group Coordinator.

EMPLAB has the primary responsibility for supporting constituents for better employment outcomes, including for youth, based on the normative guidelines of C 122 (Employment Policy conventio. The Branch develops and advocates for integrated global and country employment policy frameworks, builds knowledge on employment and labour market policies, facilitates tripartite policy dialogue on employment promotion, and supports policy development and implementation by strengthening relevant labour market institutions and building capacities of constituents. Within this framework, the Branch assists governments and social partners in developing the new generation of genderresponsive National Employment Policies (NEP, which have a stronger focus on employment diagnostics, proemployment economic policies for job creation, future of work drivers, gender equality, and labour market programmes and services for transitions over the life course, with age (in particular youth employmenand gender, as cross cutting elements. Due consideration is given to risks factors associated with health, economic and political crises that impact the labour market and employment outcomes. The Branch also provides support to ILO field offices in the development and implementation of employment interventions as components of Decent Work Country Programmes (DWCPand Common Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks.

EMPLAB is composed of three technical units, namely: Employment Analyses and Economic Policies Unit (EMPLAB/ANALYSE, Employment Strategies for Inclusive Transformation Unit (EMPLAB/STRATEGIE, and Labour Market Services for Transitions Unit (EMPLAB/SERVICE, along with two groups, Gender in Employment (EMPLAB/GENDE, and Youth Employment Accelerator (EMPLAB/YOUT. The Administrative Support Unit (EMPLAB/ADMIsupports the Branch Chief and provides the necessary administrative and secretarial backing to the technical units and groups.

The Gender in Employment group ensures that the promoted strategies, programmes and policies, and their implementation at the national, regional and global levels, are genderresponsive. Related functions include the development of tools and guidelines and training curricula on gender and employment policies, diagnostics and methodologies to evaluate the gender impacts on policies and programmes, and support to advocacy, technical advisory and capacity building work for the adoption of genderresponsive employment policy frameworks, build relevant partnerships and programmes, and mobilise resources towards this objective.

Learning Area

As an intern on Genderresponsive Employment Policies with the Gender in Employment Group you will be exposed to policy and research work at the forefront of a genderresponsive and jobrich COVID19 recovery. You will get in touch with ILO’s country level employment policy work in connection with the UN Women – ILO Joint Programme “Promoting decent employment for women through inclusive growth policies and investments in care” (https://www.ilo.org/emppolicy/projects/inclusivegrowthandgender/langen/index.ht.

You will also gain research experience in working to analyse labour market data to identify the differential impacts of the COVID19 crisis on women and men, and the recovery dynamics.

More broadly, you will also learn from participating in knowledge development and dissemination activities, branchlevel debates, employment webinars, and other forms of exchange. All in all, you will benefit from becoming part of a dynamic group of experts in the field of employment policies, who are also open and welcoming, and who will allow you to make the most of your ILO internship experience.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Education

The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago. Areas of studies should be in Economics/ Labour Economics/ Economic Development or a related field. Pursuing further studies in gender studies/ feminist economics particularly desirable.

Experience

Experience in research, and knowledge of statistical software (SPSS, STATwould be and advantage.

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HR, hiring departments will shortlist applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, email, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend/Financial compensations:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundatio. If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.

Qualified candidates from nonand underrepresented countries may be eligible for a special fund that provides financial assistance for roundtrip airfare (economy clasin addition to the stipend.
