Job Purpose and Organizational Context

UNDP is the knowledge frontier organization for sustainable development in the UN Development System and serves as the integrator for collective action to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG. UNDP’s policy work carried out at HQ, Regional and Country Office levels, forms a contiguous spectrum of deep local knowledge to cuttingedge global perspectives and advocacy. In this context, UNDP invests in the Global Policy Network (GP, a network of fieldbased and global technical expertise across a wide range of knowledge domains and in support of the signature solutions and organizational capabilities envisioned in the Strategic Plan.

Within the GPN, the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPhas the responsibility for developing all relevant policies and guidance to support the results of UNDP’s Strategic Plan. BPPS’s staff provides technical advice to Country Offices, advocates for UNDP corporate messages, represents UNDP at multistakeholder fora including publicprivate dialogues, government, and civil society dialogues, and engages in UN interagency coordination in specific thematic areas. BPPS supports UNDP and partners to be more innovative, knowledge and data driven including in its programme support efforts.

Pollution through chemicals and waste is deeply linked to the planetary crises of biodiversity loss and climate change with negative impacts across the Sustainable Development Goals. UNDP features the UN’s largest portfolio of incountry programming on environment, climate change, and energy – with a significant portfolio relevant to plastics and solid waste management.

This position is anchored within BPPS’ Chemicals and Waste Hub, which focuses on the sound management of chemicals and waste. The Hub supports countries in the economic transformation towards sustainable production and consumption to boost circular economy and create carbon neutral, toxicfree, zero pollution and zerowaste societies. Together with partners, the team helps countries to meet their obligations under the Montreal Protocol, Stockholm Convention, Minamata Convention, Strategic Approach of International Chemical Management (SAICand a future global plastics treaty.

The Chemicals and Waste Hub is looking to recruit a Communications and Knowledge Management Analyst to boost awareness internally and externally of the Hub’s global flagship initiatives, including the Global Zero Waste Initiative, FARM+, iCOAST, and others, as well as general communications on our portfolio including cooling (MLF, GEF chemicals, CoolUp, FFEM supported project, to develop global advocacy campaigns, and support knowledgeand evidencebased decisionmaking across the portfolio.

Duties and Responsibilities
Communications:
  • Develop and implement a global communications strategy for the Chemicals and Waste Hub;
  • Identify, develop, and create compelling content, such as blogs, multimedia stories, videos, graphics, and social media updates to showcase impact on the ground;
  • Contribute to UNDP’s social media accounts;
  • Produce advocacy campaigns to position UNDP on key issues related to chemicals and waste;
  • Maintain and continuously improve Chemicals and Waste Hub website;
  • Design presentations, knowledge products, fact sheets, and other knowledge products;
  • Coordinate, produce and promote a Chemicals and Waste Hub newsletter;
  • Develop press releases, talking points, and video messages as needed;
  • Plan and support UNDP’s presence and participation at key events;
  • Edit relevant knowledge products such as policy briefs or fact sheets;
  • Serve as communications focal point for Regional Technical Advisors;
  • Prepare analytics and engagement reports;
  • Coordinate with communications colleagues across different teams at HQ, regional bureaus and Country Offices to align initiatives.

Knowledge management:

  • Compile, share, and present key results from UNDP’s chemicals and waste portfolio, including on gender and safeguards, in a compelling format targeting national and international partners.
  • Identify and develop case studies together with technical colleagues and project staff;
  • Manage and maintain the team’s annual events calendar;
  • Structure and maintain the team’s knowledge management infrastructure;
  • Support the planning, participation and hosting of internal knowledge sharing events.

The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

Institutional Arrangement

  • The Communications and Knowledge Management Analyst will work in UNDP’s Chemicals and Waste Hub;
  • The Communications and Knowledge Management Analyst will report to, and be directly supervised by the Chemicals and Waste Programme Analyst based in New York, USA;
  • The Communications and Knowledge Management Analyst will be given access to relevant information necessary for execution of the tasks under this assignment;
  • The Communications and Knowledge Management Analyst will be responsible for providing her/his own working station (i.e. laptop, internet, phone, scanner/printer, assignment specific software, etc.) and must have access to a reliable internet connection.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
  • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalenin communications, journalism, marketing or another relevant field is required, or
  • A firstlevel university degree (bachelor’s degrein the areas stated above, in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
  • Minimum two years (with Master´s degreor four years (with Bachelor´s degreof professional experience working on different aspects of strategic communications such as campaigns, website editing, writing, graphic design, and social media management.
  • Knowledge of basic website editing, graphic design with Adobe, Canva or other tools, developing, producing, and editing videos for social media (Premiere, Lumen5, Canva, etc., and social media content creation and management

Desired additional skills and competencies

  • Ability to perform trainings and presentation for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrates integrity by modeling UN values and ethical standards and proves knowledge of UNDP’s gender equality and safeguards policies.
  • Work experience within UN system.
  • Experience working on environmental and health issues and familiarity with chemicals/waste/pollution work is an advantage.
