Duties and Responsibilities
United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRis a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and nongovernmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI’ s goals are: • to advance understanding of crimerelated problems; • to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; • to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; and • to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance. This internship (which will be through telecommutinis with UNICRI’s programme related to illicit financial flows, and the recovery of assets linked to organised criminal activity, corruption and the financing of terrorism. The duration of the internship is for an initial period of two (2) months, with an opportunity of an additional extension for up to a total period of six (6) months. See more info on www.unicri.org Under the supervision of the Senior Legal Officer (Asset Recover, the intern will be involved in UNICRI activities concerning the collection and review of research material related to the risks of corruption in the EU Southern Neighborhood (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon and Jorda. Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Prepare draft written translation from English into Arabic and viceversa of communications and documents as needed; • Participate in virtual meetings and events to assist with interpretation from English into Arabic and viceversa; • Prepare and/or proofread Arabic translations of reports related to the work of the office; • Support in the preparation of anticorruption awareness raising campaigns; • Assist in identifying and/or following the work of civil society organizations and governmental institutions in the EU Southern Neighborhood; • Conduct, if needed, any brief followup research, as well as obtain national counterpart feedback on issues related to corruption and illicit financial flows to help ensure accuracy of information conveyed in Arabic; • Assist in the identification of national and international stakeholders and media channels (mailing detailfor a pertinent and strategic distribution of UNICRI’s messages, particularly for UNICRI’s Arabic messaging (in tone and tactfulneson sensitive issues; • Conduct daily monitoring of relevant news and updates from EU Institutions and EU media on relevant thematic areas of intervention to streamline communication and visibility efforts; • Assist with other communication activities, including the drafting and dissemination of communication material on the available social media channels; • Monitor regional news sources for relevant articles and stories pertinent to the project, program or unit activities; • Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, professional reports; • Support the organization of meetings and conferences, issue briefing notes, talking points, meeting minutes, presentations, etc. • Perform other jobrelated duties as assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or highein studies relevant to translation or interpretation and/or the work of law enforcement, criminal justice, crime prevention and control, or related fields; (be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalenin studies relevant to translation or interpretation and/or the work of law enforcement, criminal justice, crime prevention and control, or related fields. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic is required for this internship. Knowledge of other official languages of the United Nations is an asset.
