Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEis the leading global environmental authority that sets the international environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Climate Change Division, Mitigation Branch manages the “NDC Action” Project – jointly implemented by UNEP and the UNEP DTU Partnership (UD– aimed at supporting ten partner countries to translate their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCunder the Paris Agreement into concrete strategies and actions ready for financing and implementation, and fosters accelerated public and private investment in sector specific NDC implementation. It builds on three core principles: country ownership, balanced focus between adaptation and mitigation, and integration with national development and climate change priorities. The main objective of the consultancy is to support UNEP’s Climate Change Division with the global coordination, management and implementation of the NDC Action Project and with relevant activities on NDC 0 and longterm climate action plans and energy transition strategies. The consultant will support UNEP’s Climate Change Division with the global coordination, management and implementation of the NDC Action Project and with relevant activities on NDC 0 and longterm climate action plans and energy transition strategies. In particular, the consultant will: 1) Support the development of the internal Project Document for the NDC Action Programme, including theory of change, logframe and budget 2) Support the management of NDC Action Project in partner countries, including monitoring of implementation, donor and UNEP reporting, contracting, liaising with all teams involved 3) Support the orderly NDC Action project operational and financial closure processes 4) Explore opportunities to attract additional funding for NDC and/or LTS related support in coordination with other Climate Change Division colleagues involved 5) Support the organization of global and regional events and steering committee meetings, as needed, and in close consultation with the project manager 6) Participate in the organization of project workshops and/or webinars 7) Support the elaborating of policy briefs, studies, concept notes and/or technical analyses, as/if needed 8) Support the Division on NDC 0, climate action plans and energy transition strategies
Qualifications/special skills
• An advanced university degree (Masters or equivalenin Climate Change/Environmental Studies, International Development, or related studies At least five years of experience with relevance to climate change, sustainable development, support to environment/development projects, and/or working with/in developing countries; • Proven handson knowledge of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCsupport, climate transparency, and/or any other topic closely related to the implementation of the Paris Agreement; • Familiarity with project management support, such as organising (virtuaworkshops and stakeholder consultations, drafting briefings notes, developing and/or revising project documents and concepts, project monitoring and reporting; • Experience working with climate and development stakeholders from recipient countries and national development agencies, international organizations, and technical partners; • Experience working with/for the UN is highly desirable; • Strong communication skills, ability to listen and analyse carefully, rigorous and autonomous; and • High motivation to support developing countries in planning and implementing climate actions.
