JOB DESCRIPTION

Title of Assignment: Communications Specialist

Name of unit/sector: News and Media Division

Place of Assignment: Geneva, Switzerland

Expected duration of new assignment: The contract is expected to run from January 1 to December 31, 2025, inclusive, renewable possible for up to two years in total.

1. Objective of the assignment

The Communications Specialist will reinforce the implementation of a communications plan for WIPO’s activities, with a strong focus on story sourcing, content creation and social media outreach in dynamic intellectual property (IP) related realms. The incumbent will create content across a range of topics illustrating how IP is used by people to turn ideas into market realities and address common global challenges, while supporting economic and national development for everyone, everywhere. The incumbent will also guide subject-matter experts in their communications activities

The position is located in the News and Media Division, on behalf of individual business Sectors.

2. Tasks and deliverables

Tasks:
• Further enhance Sector communications efforts in line with WIPO’s strategy that uses storytelling to illustrate the positive benefits of the use of IP, especially by traditionally under-represented groups like youth, women and smaller enterprises.
• Research and draft original content that is appropriate for digital channels including the WIPO website and the Organization’s social media channels.
• Coordinate the creation of content by Units designated Sectors with the communications focal points established in the Units.
• Create/update related web content to enhance its impact on audiences.
• Assist in the establishment and management of social media channels including content planning, production, and community management.
• Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the communications strategies and the suggestion of course corrections.

Deliverables:
• Create/update website related web content.
• Develop proposals for communications channels with key stakeholders.
• Effectively coordinate the creation of compelling content from Units in the Sector.
• Develop and implement proposals for enhanced social media activity by the Sector.
• Other duties as required

3. Reporting 

The consultant will work under the supervision of the Senior Media Officer in the News and Media Division. The supervisor will evaluate the consultant’s work and certify delivery of work.

4. Profile

Education

Essential:
University degree in a communications-related area, social sciences, or other relevant discipline

Experience

Essential:
At least 5 years of experience in external communications for a public or private sector organization.

Excellent portfolio with a proven track record of successful communication strategy examples

Advertisement

Experience in corporate social media management and the creation and publication of social-media content.

Desirable:
Experience in story telling through the creation of high-quality content (written and/or video) and media performance evaluation (KPIs, analytics).

Experience working in developing-country contexts and on cutting edge technology issues.

Skills

Essential:
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
• Excellent creative writing skills, including film scripting
• Excellent research skills
• Excellent ability to work quickly and calmly under tight deadline requirements
• An eye for detail and a high level of accuracy, good understanding of political dynamics and diplomacy
• Ability to grasp new ideas and subjects quickly
• Social media management skills

Desirable:
• Ability to work with visual media software platforms, including Adobe Creative Suite
• Knowledge of WIPO and IP

Languages

Essential:
Excellent written and spoken knowledge of English

5. Duration of contract and payment

The contract is expected to run from January 1 to December 31, 2025, inclusive. Applicants are requested to provide an indication of their remuneration expectations in Swiss francs (daily rate).
