The World Bank Country Office in Pretoria, South Africa, is seeking to hire an Office Driver. This role involves working within the Country Office transport pool to drive office vehicles, transporting authorized personnel primarily within Gauteng, but also to other locations in South Africa and occasionally to neighboring countries. Responsibilities also include delivering and collecting mail, documents, pouches, and running other errands. High-quality work is essential, requiring staff who balance technical excellence, country knowledge, and client focus. This position is vital to the overall performance of the Bank at the Pretoria duty location.

Purpose and Scope of the Position

The Office Driver will be based in the Pretoria Country office and will form part of the Administrative team. The Administrative team activities include:

  • Supporting the Country Management team in administration of the Country Office
  • Management of Administrative Procurement contracts and processes.
  • Events Management and Visiting Missions.
  • Liaising with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation on visa and accreditation requirements.
  • Oversee transportation and logistics and ensure use of Bank-owned vehicles in line with World Bank policy.
  • The Administrative team works closely with the Business Performance Review & Strategic Planning (BPS), Corporate Real Estate (GSDCR), Corporate Security (GSDCS), Health Services Dept HSD, IT, Administration and Client Support (ACS), and Human Resources (HRS) to ensure effective administration of the country office.
  • The selected candidate will work under the general supervision of the Operations Manager, with the day-to-day supervision of the Administrative Officer, and may take on other tasks and responsibilities as needed at the direction of the supervisor.

 Duties and Accountabilities

To perform according to expectations, the candidate would be expected to:

  • Transport authorized personnel to/from airports, meetings, appointments, and other official duties, including business travel to/from locations throughout South Africa.
  • Operate the assigned office vehicle and prioritize the safety of staff and other road users.
  • Deliver and collect mail, documents, and other items, and fulfilling any additional transportation needs.
  • Meet officials, mission staff at the airport and adhering to local protocols or destination-specific formalities.
  • Conduct visual pre- and post-journey vehicle inspections for roadworthiness; maintain and upkeep office vehicle(s) in accordance with manufacture guidelines.
  • Perform day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle by checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc.
  • Regularly update the World Bank Senior Security Specialists and Administrative Officer on the vehicle inspections and maintenance checks.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is always clean (interior and exterior, including safety belts) and assist or ensure that all passengers have fastened safety belts.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is equipped with First Aid kit and that s/he is trained in providing first aid. Check expiry date for consumables in the kit and seek replacement as appropriate.
  • Log official trips as per the World Bank’s policies, including daily mileage, fuel consumption, oil changes etc.
  • Ensure that the documentation for office vehicles, such as the license disc, is always up to date, including the display of current insurance coverage.
  • Observe the country’s traffic laws and regulations.
  • Regularly review and follow security information and environmental conditions to ensure safe driving both within and outside the cities.
  • Ensure the confidentiality of any discussions or phone conversations held by passengers.
  • Report all road traffic crashes and near-crashes to the World Bank Senior Security Specialists and Administrative Officer.

 

Selection Criteria

 

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP), and capable of defensive driving.
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent certification, with a minimum of 5 years’ professional driving experience with a safe driving record.
  • Possess basic skills in minor vehicle repairs and maintenance.
  • Proficient in effectively communicating in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent administrative skills, including ability to use GPS/online maps, and proficient in Microsoft Office to maintain reports and for communication purposes.
  • Strong geographical knowledge of the region, including safe and alternative routes.
  • Thorough knowledge of driving rules and regulations and conversant with the Road Security Code.
  • Maintaining a professional appearance
  • Must have a high level of discretion, commitment and reliability.
  • Capacity to deal sensitively in multi-cultural environment and build effective working relations with clients and colleagues at all levels.
  • Willingness to work outside regular hours as required.
