Internship with UNHCR in Albania
PI/Communications Intern

Organizational Unit: UNHCR Representation in Albania /External Relations Unit
Duty station: Tirana, Albania
Type of Contract: Internship (Part-time)
Duration: Three months (with possibility of extension up to eight months)

Background information/Organizational Context

Established in 1950, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. UNHCR works to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution, war or disaster at home. This position is based out of UNHCR country operation in Tirana, Albania. In Albania, UNHCR works to support the strengthening of national asylum systems and related processes to provide protection and viable solutions to refugees and asylum-seekers. To this end, UNHCR invests in strategic communication efforts, aiming to engage and influence a broad audience. UNHCR leverages a diverse array of multimedia resources, encompassing written articles, photography, and video content, disseminated through online channels and social media to effectively reach and resonate with its target audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent will be required to perform the following activities:

Digital Engagement and Storytelling:
• Facilitate the creation and publication of bilingual content on the Office’s social media channels to boost digital engagement and outreach.
• Analyse social media metrics and derive insights to refine content strategies and enhance audience interaction.
• Keep informed of the latest Albanian social media trends to inform the creation of relevant and engaging content.
• Collaborate with UNHCR partners to collect compelling stories that highlight human experiences.
Media Monitoring:
• Conduct ongoing monitoring of both traditional and new media to identify and assess information that is pertinent to stakeholder populations.
Media Engagement:
• Maintain an up-to-date media contact list to facilitate effective communication distribution and to support the strengthening and expansion of media partnerships.
Event Management:
• Aid in the organization and implementation of public information events, including managing logistics and promotional activities.
Public Information and Visibility Materials Support:
• Support coordination within the team to ensure the design, production and inventory management of public information and visibility materials are executed effectively.
Translation Support:
• Provide translation assistance for a variety of documents, communications, and materials between English and Albanian, facilitating the Office’s ability to reach a multilingual audience.

Minimum qualifications required
In order to be considered for the internship, the following criteria must be fulfilled:

• Educational Background: Recent graduate or currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a university or higher education institution, with a focus on Journalism, Mass Communication, Digital Communication, Social Sciences, Translation, or a related field.
• Language Proficiency and Writing Skills: Exceptional command of both English and Albanian, with outstanding writing skills in both languages.
• Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated ability in photography and graphic design, including familiarity with Canva.
• Communications: Strong understanding of communications, traditional and digital media strategies, and a passion for storytelling.
• Interpersonal and Coordination Skills: Superior interpersonal communication skills, with the capability to effectively collaborate and coordinate activities within a team environment and across various departments.

Eligibility

To be considered for an internship, candidates must:

• be a recent graduate* or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO;
• have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant to, or of interest to, the work of the organization; and
• not have immediate relatives (father, mother, brother, or sister) working for UNHCR as a staff member on any contract type or as an affiliate at the time of application.
• Upon selection, the candidate will be subject to proof for full vaccination against COVID-19
*Recent graduates are considered to be candidates who completed their studies within two years of applying for an internship with UNHCR.

Administration

Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive a prorated (based on the number of hours they work compared to a full-time schedule) monthly Food and Local Transportation Allowance (the Allowance), payable in local currency via bank transfer. The monthly amount of the Allowance is: 70% of the monthly net salary of the GS level 3 step 1 in Albania, adjusted according to the part-time hours worked.

Interns are fully responsible for arranging medical insurance covering the full internship period. UNHCR accepts no responsibility for any costs connected to medical insurance of interns. A copy of proof of a valid medical insurance covering the period of the Internship Agreement is required by UNHCR.

Upon completion of the internship, interns are provided with an official UNHCR attestation letter and upon request and agreement with the supervisor a letter of recommendation. The incumbent will be required to hold a valid medical insurance covering the full period of the internship.

Candidates must be legally present in Albania at the time of application, recruitment and hire.
