Duties and Responsibilities
The duration of the internship is for two (2) months with a possibility of extension to six (6) months. This internship is UNPAID in person and full-time (35 hours per week), on the United Nations premise working arrangement from (New York, USA). This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote. Under the overall supervision of the Political Affairs Officer, the Intern will perform the following duties and assist the Unit with special projects that may include, but are not limited to: • Support update and creation of content for the “UN and Decolonization” website • Support DECOL’s external communications work with a focus on creating and posting content on social media • Support initiatives on data visualization, disability inclusion, multilingualism, e-analytics and other initiatives • Monitor activities in Non-Self-Governing Territories (NSGTs) • Conduct research on decolonization issues, both historical and current • Assist in preparing a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, charts, data sets, and/or diagrams in order to facilitate in-depth analysis by supervisors • Attend a variety of meetings and draft meeting notes, etc. • Perform other related duties as required. Our interns work as members of the Decolonization Unit team.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: 1. Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degreeor equivalent, or higher); or b. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) 2. Field of study to be preferably in political science, history, international relations, law or a related field; 3. Proficient in standard word processing and software applications (such as Microsoft Word,Excel and PowerPoint or similar) and website creation/management softwares; and proficient in standard office automation equipment, scanner, printer, etc.) 4. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter. 5. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. A field of study that in political science, history, international relations, law or closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Publications in the field of international politIcal affairs is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
