Duties and Responsibilities
The duration of the internship is for six (6) months. This internship is UNPAID in person and full-time (35 hours per week), on the United Nations premise working arrangement from (New York, USA). This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote. This position is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). OROLSI is comprised of five components: Police Division; Justice and Corrections Service; Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Section; Security Sector Reform Unit; and UN Mine Action Service. The Gender and Rule of Law Intern will support OROLSI to advance international gender equality norms and the Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security (WPS). Under the overall supervision of the Gender Affairs Officer, the incumbent will support OROLSI in advancing the following goals: Goal 1: Enhance coordination and provision of strategic guidance and gender affairs-related technical support to OROLSI Functions: 1. Support the organization of meetings of the OROLSI Coordination Group on the Women, Peace and Security (WPS), including by preparing presentations, sending invites, taking timely notes, and organizing meetings with gender focal points at OROLSI field components. 2. Support the management of the OROLSI WPS knowledge hub in the Microsoft Teams channel, including by updating and adding events, saving documents and sharing regular information among members of the Group. 3. Attend assigned meetings and events and prepare concise summary notes 4. Support the development and coordination of inputs to relevant UN reports Goal 2: Increase understanding of where policy and operational gaps remain and what practical steps could be taken by OROLSI to accelerate gender equality Functions: 1. Support OROLSI in the development of a study on accelerating gender equality in rule of law and security institutions 2. Support the collection of information and management of OROLSI datasets on gender equality, including the (a) dataset on international norms, mandates and policies on gender equality; and (b) documentation of OROLSI good practices on gender equality at country level. 3. Support individual and group consultations with OROLSI staff at HQ and field leadership and gender focal points, key UN entities and strategic partners (Member States, women organizations and others identified in the research plan. 4. Support the development of an online survey with OROLSI staff Goal 3: Increase visibility and data of OROLSI’s impact on gender equality Functions: 1. Supports the development of communication deliverables, including a webpage on gender equality and WPS for OROLSI. 2. Assist with the dissemination of content from the study on UN websites, social media, reports and publications 3. Support strategic engagement efforts with external partners such as research organizations and Member States 4. Perform any other duties as required
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
