Who are we

Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a new colleague to join our roving Emergency, Protection, Assistance and Coordination Team (EMPACT), a multifunctional team of senior Emergency Response Specialists deployable within 72 hours to support DRC Country Offices respond to emergency situations.

We are looking for a highly engaged, flexible and driven emergency advocacy and communications advisor to deploy globally into emergency contexts across DRC’s operations to deliver emergency advocacy and communications strategies and content with the ability to deliver under pressure and with short time frames. DRC’s EMPACT members need to show independence and determination to bring rapid and timely emergency programming to crises and to support country operations in scale up, redesign and roll out of activities. Roving Emergency Coordinators need to promote excellence in their field, promote emergency standards, humanitarian principles, CHS standard and rights driven approach to programming and go above and beyond typical requirements in often unstable and pressured environments.

About the job

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Deploy globally for periods of 1 to 3 months of emergency response with a focus on advocacy and communications
  • Lead on emergency advocacy and communications deliverables for a specific emergency context
  • Ensure that high quality, safe, principled, consultative and engaging communications products across different platforms and mediums
  • Lead on the development of a communications plan and advocacy strategy to align with the emergency response plan linked to DRC priorities and wider humanitarian policies, conventions, principles and forums
  • Build capacity of and increase engagement with colleagues and partners to elevate the communications and advocacy deliverables as well as some external engagement
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of DRC’s Emergency Advocacy and Communications procedures and guidelines as well as the global and regional strategies and goals

About you

To be successful in this role we expect you to have a proven record of advocacy and communications in emergency response, ideally with experience in the sectors DRC works in, and in multiple contexts and a willingness and desire to work in both high-pressure and unstable environments. All employees should demonstrate DRC’s core competencies: Communicating, Taking the lead, Collaborating, Striving for excellence and Demonstrating integrity. Moreover, we also expect the following:

Required

  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience in delivering advocacy and communications deliverables in emergency settings
  • Proven experience working in complex emergency contexts
  • A University level degree in relevant subject or relevant technical qualification
  • Ability to live and work in an unstable, insecure environment
