Organizational Setting
FAO country offices, headed by an FAO Representative, are assisting governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition.
Reporting Lines
The Gender Officer reports to the FAO Representative in the country of assignment, and will work with the relevant Regional Gender Officer, the gender team in the Inclusive Rural Transformation and Gender Equality Division at Hq and other technical units at subregional, regional and HQ level, as well as the country Gender focal point.
Technical Focus
The incumbent will support the implementation of FAO’s Policy on Gender Equality (2020-2030) and will address aspects such as achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment in food security/nutrition/agrifood systems; mainstreaming gender issues in projects and programmes, supporting gender-responsive disaster risk reduction, resilience building and climate-smart agriculture; reduction of gender-based violence in the context of food security and nutrition.
Key Functions
• Support conducting gender analysis and collecting sex- and age-disaggregated data and guide efforts for the formulation of gender-sensitive indicators suitable for disaster risk reduction, emergency responses and resilience building;
• Help identifying and addressing the underlying causes of gender inequalities and the multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination, affecting particularly women and girls, in the local humanitarian context;
• Raise awareness on gender-based violence among colleagues and external partners (i.e. participate in local sensitization campaigns) and guide the formulation of humanitarian interventions that reduce any protection risks, particularly against women and girls; Assist in the design of gender-responsive and inclusive emergency and resilience building programs/ interventions and in addressing protection issues and the empowerment of women and girls in rural communities, ensuring that gender equality is adequately considered at all phases of the project cycle from the formulation and implementation to monitoring and evaluation;
• Respond to requests and provide technical advice and recommended actions to address gender equality and women’s empowerment in FAO’s humanitarian appeals and field projects;
• Support the development of training and information materials and tools, and the organization ofe training and coaching sessions targeted to FAO staff and Implementing Partners, through workshops, knowledge sharing and awareness raising;
• Share promising and innovative inclusive and gender-responsive approaches and good practices to promote gender equality, support the empowerment and give equal voice to women and girls, and reduce the risks of different forms of Gender-Based Violence, ensuring linkages with on-going protection work;
• Contribute to the preparation of thematic technical reports and briefs, produced monthly or as required,develop/maintain sex- and age-disaggregated data and produce gender statistics to guide the design of gender-responsive interventions and raise gender awareness;
• Support in strengthening the capacity and skills of affected women and youth, and the most vulnerable socio-economic and ethnic groups, to increase their engagement in planning and negotiation processes, including in sustainable peace building;
• Perform any other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements
• Experience in gender-related matters, gender equality and women’s empowerment, and mainstreaming of gender issues in programming and relevant work.

Technical/Functional Skills
• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is desirable;
