JOB DETAIL

Mission and objectives

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Context

Since 2018, UN Women ECARO is implementing a Flagship Programme Initiative (FPI): “Making Every Woman and Girl Count” (Women Count), developed by UN Women Headquarters (HQ), that aims to affect a radical shift in the production, availability, accessibility and use of quality data and statistics on key aspects of gender equality and women’s empowerment. To support implementation in the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region, UN Women Regional Office (RO) has developed the regional programme, which is specific to the context of the ECA region. It aims to provide technical support to countries to improve production and use of gender statistics for SDG monitoring and reporting, as well as to strengthen regional-level collaboration with key partners to better contribute to SDG monitoring at national and regional levels. At country level the programme works in close cooperation with National Statistical Offices (NSOs), National Women’s Machinery, civil society organizations (CSOs), UN Country Teams to ensure that gender statistics are available, accessible and analysed to inform and deliver policymaking, advocacy and accountability, as well as for the implementation of the Leave No One Behind principle. One of the key priorities of the Women Count regional programme is the use of alternative data-collection methods to address data gaps and promote more comprehensive gender data and evidence. In March 2024, UN Women in collaboration with the School of Data and Data against Feminicide launched a multi-country initiative to generate new data to assess and understand the prevalence of femicide in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. These data aim to spur strategic advocacy for the legal recognition of femicide and inform evidence-based actions and strategies to prevent violence against women and girls in Central Asia. The key findings of the research studies will be released during the campaign “16 days of activism against gender-based violence”. The Women Count programme is also developing a regional gender data and statistics webpage and an interactive dashboard at the UN Women website. The webpage and dashboard would enable a user to access, analyze and visualize data on different topics, indicators and countries by thematic areas such as violence against women and girls, women’s economic empowerment, gender and climate, women’s political participation and leadership, among others. The finalization of the webpage is planned by mid-December 2024. The online volunteer will provide communications support to the Women Count Team within the initiatives: 1. Awareness, Advocacy and Outreach: Supporting UN Women to organize events, advocacy campaigns, and use social media to amplify messages about ending violence against women in Central Asia 2. Content compilation for the regional gender data and statistics webpage and dashboard: Supporting with desk research of relevant resources on gender data in the region, content matrix for the webpage, including secondary pages/subsections
