The Associate in the Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) provides assistance to the team. The London office serves as an important base for HRW’s development, fundraising, and outreach activities in the UK. The Associate is based in London and this position is full-time at 40 hours per week and requires availability to work occasional night and weekend events. The Associate reports to the Senior Manager within the Development and Outreach team, based in Barcelona.

This position is permitted to work from home but they will be expected to be based in London and attend the office at least two days a week, as well as regular donor events.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with logistics and event support for in-person and online events such as annual dinners, receptions, committee meetings, briefings, and other events throughout the year by coordinating vendors and researchers, timelines, invitations, RSVPs, event materials, venue details, tracking of event costs and revenue; working closely with DevOps to build event pages;
  2. Prepare, draft, edit, format and/or distribute correspondence, documents and other materials, including donor updates and Next Gen communications, event registration pages, web content for the UK website, the regular HRW London community newsletter (using online software such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Engaging Networks and Mailchimp) and other relevant social media content;
  3. Coordinate the administration of all gifts, including processing, tracking and acknowledging gifts using HRW’s Salesforce database as well as regularly updating the Development and Outreach team; Develop and employ strategic relationships and networks with talent sources such as schools, social networks, partner agencies, and employment professionals;
  4. Coordinate and maintain the UK universe of donors and prospects within HRW’s Salesforce database including updating records and information, generating financial reports, lists and queries, optimizing data collection, ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of the data, and overseeing data adherence to the General Data Protection Regulation;
  5. Support prospect, major and leadership donor cultivation and stewardship by coordinating correspondence, contacting donors when required, scheduling and preparing for donor meetings and events, tracking communication, and preparing donor/prospect research and meeting briefings;
  6. Support all aspects of income and revenue generation for Development and Outreach in London, including tracking and recording leadership gifts and leadership prospects as well as regular reporting on income generation and donor analytics, capturing and analyzing revenue for events and donations;
  7. Support the annual Gift Aid audit and submission to HM Revenue and Customs; ensuring gift aid documentation is filed and stored accurately; corresponding with donors to ensure files are kept up to date;
  8. Provide administrative support to the team and to HRW’s UK Charitable Trust, including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, preparing agendas and background materials, responding to written and phone inquiries, recording and processing divisional finances, processing mail, and making travel arrangements;
  9. Identify opportunities for improvement and optimization of the use of Salesforce database and other systems, tools and processes for the Development and Outreach team in London;
  10. Support and monitor communications with the Finance Division and the Operations Division on all queries relating to gifts; and the UK bank account;
  11. Lead on the engagement of HRW’s Next Gen ambassador community in the UK, including coordinating logistics for in-person and online events; stewarding Next Gen co-chairs and ambassadors; identifying and engaging new members; working with the co-chairs to shape strategy, and
  12. Carry out other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience is required.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Professional experience using Salesforce or similar database systems is desired.
  2. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills is required.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required.
  4. Ability to work well under deadlines while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is required.
  5. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.
  6. Any of the following skills would be considered an asset, but are not required: fundraising experience, HTML, basic graphic design, or grant writing.
  7. Strong interest in international human rights, event management, and fundraising is desirable.
  8. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of audience is desirable.
  9. Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in locations globally is desirable.
