• Provision of support to the IPBES review panel according to the terms of reference set out in annex IX to decision IPBES-10/1 • Delivery of the IPBES external review report in time for processing and presentation to IPBES 12 (tentatively scheduled for 29 November-4 December 2025)
Work Location
The consultant will be requested to travel to the IPBES secretariat offices in Bonn, Germany, at least twice, for about three to four weeks each time, corresponding to a total of about two months of work to be performed in Bonn. The consultant is also expected to attend one in-person meeting of the review panel.
Expected duration
The total duration of the work amounts to 6 months of work, spread between 1 February and 31 December 2025. Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of about 150 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Under the overall supervision of the co-chairs of the IPBES review panel, the Consultant will provide technical support to the external review panel conducting a midterm review of the IPBES 2030 rolling work programme:
Qualifications/special skills
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in international development, environmental science, social sciences, economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • Minimum 10 years of experience in evaluating or reviewing international organizations and governance, preferably in the field of the environment, is required; • Expertise in organization and management is required; previous experience with UN Rules and Regulations is an advantage; • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to speak clearly and to write clear, concise drafts in English is required; • Experience in planning and organizing international events and/or conferences is desirable; • Good organizational and personal management skills, with ability to prioritize work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through are desirable; • Experience with international projects related to IPBES, biodiversity and the environment is an advantage; • Experience in working with national or global assessment processes is an advantage.
