JOB DESCRIPTION

About IRRI

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.

Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

Job Purpose

Rice is a staple crop in ASEAN countries, vital for food security and economic stability. However, rice cultivation significantly contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly methane. To address these challenges and work towards carbon neutrality, IRRI develops sustainable and low-carbon rice cropping systems together with various partners. Straw residue management is one of key factors in achieving this goal with its influence on both crop productivity, soil fertility and GHG emissions.

This position will be based in Hanoi, Vietnam and is open for international applications.

Roles and Responsibilities

The incumbent will, in collaboration with colleagues of IRRI’s Climate-resilient Farming Systems Unit, contributes to the development and implementation of integrated low-carbon farming practices and rice cropping systems aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and ensuring food security in ASEAN countries. The focus of the work will be around the following key areas and responsibilities:

  • Study the types of microorganisms involved in rice straw decomposition through literature survey and analysis of available data
  • Working with the team (IRRI and related partners) to isolate microbial strains of indigenous origin with the function of decomposing rice straw, reducing H2S and CH4 production in rice production
  • Conduct study to optimize decomposition conditions through exploration of factors like temperature, moisture, and pH that influence the rate and efficiency of decomposition
  • Develop new microbial strains with enhanced decomposition capabilities
  • Study microbial interactions between different microorganisms involved in the process
  • Develop, maintain and update a comprehensive database strains of rice straw decomposing microorganisms
  • Contribute to microcosm/mesocosm and field experiments
  • Analyze data and prepare technical reports, technology briefs, and scientific papers
  • Engage with public and private sector partners to establish new partnerships and co-develop low-carbon farming practices
  • Participate in and present research findings at key ASEAN-related events and any other workshops/congress
  • Assist in the organization of project meetings, including annual meetings
  • Contribute to the dissemination of project activities and results through media tools and publications
