The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Officer to Support the design, implementation, and analysis of field-based epidemiological studies focusing on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial use (AMU) in livestock systems across eight East and Southern African countries
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR Research Centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and development of training modules focused on epidemiological AMR data analysis, ensuring alignment with project goals and local needs.
- Lead and facilitate both online and in-person training sessions in various countries, ensuring the curricula are effectively delivered and adapted to local contexts.
- Contribute to the planning, designing, and implementing of country field studies, with a focus on selecting appropriate epidemiological methods to collect both active and passive data on AMR and antimicrobial use, within a One Health framework.
- Analyze both quantitative and qualitative data ensuring that the analyses adhere to scientific rigor and ethical standards, interpreting results, and write research reports, manuscripts, and presentations for dissemination.
- Liaise with government officials and other local entities as required to support project activities.
- Represent ILRI in day-to-day interactions with project partners, maintaining effective communication and fostering positive relationships with study participants, local authorities, funders, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Represent ILRI at scientific meetings, conferences, and workshops, actively contributing to the dissemination of research findings and engaging with the wider scientific community.
Requirements
- MSc degree in Epidemiology, Data Science, or Veterinary Public Health
- Minimum of three years of hands-on experience in data analysis for field-based research projects, with a focus on One Health approaches (integrating human, animal, and environmental health).
- Willingness to travel regularly across the region to support field activities, training sessions, and stakeholder engagements
- Demonstrated experience in the design, implementation, and management field studies related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), disease surveillance, or infectious disease epidemiology
- Specific experience in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting both quantitative and qualitative data is required.
- Proven ability to analyze and interpret complex epidemiological data and provide clear, actionable insights
- Proficiency in R (or other statistical software such as STATA or SPSS) for epidemiological analysis, statistical modeling, data visualization, and handling large datasets.
- Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to handle complex tasks and competing priorities, such as managing multiple research sites or studies simultaneously.
- Experience in drafting scientific reports, publications, and/or technical documents.
- Fluent in English (both written and spoken) with the ability to write technical reports and deliver presentations to diverse audiences, including academic researchers, field staff, government officials, and donors.
- Experience working in multicultural, multi-institutional teams, especially in international or cross-border settings, and the ability to adapt communication styles for diverse audiences.
Terms of Appointment
This position is at job level HG13 and it is only open to Kenyan nationals. The position is a 1 year Fixed Term contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes pension, medical and other insurances.
