JOB DESCRIPTION

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research associate – III to Provide technical, in-field support to an ambitious program focused on reducing mastitis incidence and improving antibiotic stewardship in Kenyan smallholder dairy systems.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

Key Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of the technical lead, support the design, development, and implementation of field studies, including the selection of appropriate epidemiological methods for collecting field and laboratory data.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of training materials to farmers and animal health practitioners.
  • Prepare research ethics applications, data-sharing agreements, and progress reports.
  • Contribute to the analysis of research data, interpretation of results, and preparation of reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Represent ILRI in daily interactions with project partners and maintain good relations with study participants, local authorities, funders, and other stakeholders.
  • Liaise regularly with government officials and project partners.
  • Disseminate research findings at scientific meetings and conferences.
  • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned

Requirements

  • A Bachelors degree in veterinary science or agricultural economics.
  • Minimum of three years’ work experience in field-based projects
  • Some experience in field epidemiology and collection of epidemiological data
  • Familiarity with platforms such as ODK/KoboToolbox is desirable
  • Excellent organizational, analytic, and interpretive skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Good interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills, especially to diverse audiences and targets.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and foster teamwork.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and to take initiatives.
  • Willingness to spend extended time in the field and periods outside Nairobi.

Post location: The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya

Terms of Appointment

This position is at job level HG 12 and it is only open to Kenyan nationals. The position is a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes pension, medical and other insurances.
