JOB DESCRIPTION

Job description

The Civil Peace Service (CPS) is a programme for violence prevention and peacebuilding in crisis and conflict regions. In Kenya, the GIZ – CPS contributes to the transformation of violent conflicts in the context of social inequalities. Environmental peacebuilding integrates natural resource management in conflict prevention, mitigation, resolution, and recovery to build resilience in communities affected or prone to conflict. Within the framework of the strategy taken by CPS implementing organisations and partners in Kenya, environmental peacebuilding has emerged as an important area with the goal of addressing the links that exist between environmental sustainability and peace. Therefore, CPS implementing organisations and partners in Kenya emphasize the need of integrating environmental factors into efforts to promote peace. This is in recognition of the growing challenges faced by climate change and environmental degradation. It is understood that environmental factors can greatly contribute to conflicts and also intensify tensions that are already existing as they can enhance vulnerability, fragility, and therefore increase conflict risks. Likewise, conflicts can have multiple negative effects on the environment which in turn creates conditions for peacebuilding possibilities. Moreover, natural resources may constitute a basis for cooperation and collaboration to be capitalized on for processes of conflict transformation.
