JOB DESCRIPTION

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you an enthusiastic engineer interested in the development and manufacturing of normal conducting accelerator magnets? Come and join a great team pushing the limits of this technology, working on the Future Circular Collider (FCC), take part!

Normal conducting magnets – in contrast to superconducting ones – operate at room temperature and they are at the core of the FCC lepton collider. The Magnets, Superconductors, and Cryostats (MSC) group within CERN’s Technology Department (TE) has the mandate to design, construct, and test superconducting and normal conducting magnets for the accelerator complex. The group oversees the design, integration and procurement of magnets. Additionally, it supports accelerator operations by ensuring magnet performance and maintenance. The Normal Conducting Magnets section (NCM) is focused on the normal conducting magnets for present and future accelerators and beam lines.

Join a great team ensuring the reliable operation and the upgrade of all normal conducting magnets on the CERN accelerator complex.

Functions

As magnet engineer with expertise in normal conducting accelerator magnets you will:

  • Develop cost-effective technologies for normal conducting magnets, with a focus on prototyping and their integration into the Future Circular Collider (FCC);
  • Study and propose manufacturing and procurement strategies for the FCC magnets, tailored to the scale of the project and targeting an efficient and effective production, installation and maintenance;
  • Plan, organise and direct the maintenance, repair, testing and modification of existing magnets in operation, including specific renovation campaigns, with a view to apply the lessons learned to the FCC magnets.

Qualifications

Master’s degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electro-mechanical engineering or a related field or a related field.

Experience:

We are looking for a magnet engineer to focus on the design and construction of normal conducting magnets for particle accelerators, in particular the FCC, with the following experience:

  • Proven experience in the design and construction of normal conducting accelerator magnets;
  • Experience in the procurement of normal conducting magnets, either in industry or in a laboratory;
  • Experience analysing mechanical and magnetic measurements and implementing lessons learned in the design.

Technical competencies:

  • Design and modelling of normal conducting magnets and permanent magnet systems;
  • Construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems: including normal conducting magnets;
  • Operation and maintenance of normal conducting magnet systems;
  • Design and analysis of mechanical structures;
  • Knowledge and application of magnetic materials: and electric insulation.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Demonstrating Accountability: taking responsibility for own actions and decisions Working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises;
  • Communicating Effectively: providing others with timely information Ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented;
  • Learning and Sharing Knowledge: proposing ways to improve or streamline existing procedures, processes and methodologies. Sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer;
  • Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities Contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude; addressing issues;
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements Readily absorbing new techniques and working practices; proposing new or improved ways of working.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English in professional context, the willingness to learn French.
