JOB DESCRIPTION

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

Under the supervision of the UN Clinic Health Manager or his/her nominee and within delegated authority, the Laboratory technician will be responsible of Laboratory management, Laboratory testing, Health promotion, Lead for waste management and administrative duties.

POSITION PURPOSE

Under the supervision of the UN Clinic Health Manager or his/her nominee and within delegated authority, the Laboratory technician will be responsible of Laboratory management, Laboratory testing, Health promotion, Lead for waste management and administrative duties.

KEY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

1.) Ensures Laboratory management, focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Ensure that the laboratory tests reports are managed in a timely, promptly, and confidential manner.
  • Ensure regular maintenance of all laboratory equipment following the technical specifications of the equipment manufacturers.
  • Promptly address issues with regards to quality of laboratory testing and maintenance to ensure the best quality of diagnostic services.
2.) Ensures Laboratory testing focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Attend to the UN Clinic laboratory to ensure smooth operation of the day-to-day functions.
  • Performs all laboratory tests as requested by the UN Clinic Physician in a prompt and professional manners.
  • Draws blood samples applying international sterilization and bio safety standards.
  • Autoclave and sterilize the instruments and containers following international standard of bio safety.
3.) Ensures Health promotion, focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Participate in planning, organizing, and implementing preventive health services as well as health promotion activities at the UN Clinic.
  • Support education of staff members and families during health campaigns.
  • Plan for conducting external laboratory tests for UN staff when required.
4.) Ensures Lead for waste management, focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Ensure appropriate disposal of hazardous material following international standards of bio safety in coordination with the UN Health manager, doctor and nurse.
5.) Ensures administrative duties, focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Keep written record of laboratory assets and protocols.
  • Recommend procurement of laboratory supplies and equipment and ensure that inventory is kept updated.
  • Participate in the preparedness and response to cooperate protocols such as business continuity plans.
The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the laboratory and the unit.

REQUIREMENTS 

Education
Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology is required.

Bachelor’s degree in health sciences, Medical Analysis option would be an asset.

 Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
List:

  • Minimum (5) years of continuous clinical experience in laboratory sciences with a minimum of (3) years in managing laboratory sciences in UN Clinic is required.
  • Experience in use of computer and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) with an excellent practice of UN medical platform Earthmed is required.
  • Proficiency in carrying out hematology, chemical pathology and microbiology tests is an asset.
  • Mastery of sampling techniques
  • Collection of biological samples in compliance with international sterilization and biosafety standards.
  • Previous UN medical system experience is desirable.
  • Fluency in French and /or in English is required.
