Duties and Responsibilities
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. Please visit our website at www.eclac.org for further information. The internship in the Statistics Division, Santiago, will last 2 months, depending on the needs of the Office. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an “as-needed” basis. Under the supervision or overall guidance of the Director of the Division, the intern will work on research on the relevance of official statistics for democracy. Tasks will include: – Analyze the role and impact of National Statistics Offices (NSOs) on governance and policymaking. – Collect, clean, and organize global datasets from international organizations and NSOs. – Identify trends and correlations between democracy and statistical system performance. – Prepare research papers, policy briefs, and reports on the role of NSOs in democracy. – Provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening NSOs in democratic contexts. – Work with NSOs, policymakers, and international organizations to gather insights and validate research. – Share key research findings through reports, infographics, and public-facing platforms.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
