Background Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. Duties and Responsibilities The consultant will be based in Brazil and will be under the supervision of the National Programme Management Officer in Brazil as part of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean (ROAC). Support capacity development events in the region, particularly aimed at strengthening Disaster Risk Reduction capacities at the local level. Provide technical support to identify, collect, and share knowledge, good practices and lessons learnt from the implementation activities to support urban resilience and disaster risk reduction. Provide assistance with the implementation of the Making Cities Resilient initiative (MCR2030). This includes the review of local plans, research of technical documents, and support to the workshop activities for the implementation of the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for cities and its addenda. Contribute to the preparation and review of communication materials (flyers, social media posts, event reports, etc.), ensuring alignment with donor visibility and UNDRR branding guidelines. Coordinate with technical inputs the collection, drafting and review of best practices of European Civil protection and Humanitarian aid Operation (ECHO) project and its partners, compiling the study cases in fact sheets for dissemination via Prevention Web and European Commission Humanitarian Aid department”s Disaster Preparedness Programme (DIPECHO) social channels. Coordination, review and dissemination of the outcome documents of the Caribbean Safe Schools Initiative. Coordination for the dissemination of ECHO project best practices through social media and webpages. Support local outreach activities to raise awareness of the project among stakeholders and the broader public. Provide inputs to interim and final donor reports, including updates on implementation progress, workshop results, and qualitative feedback from local partners.
