WE ARE
The Hearing Officer for competition proceedings is responsible for organizing and conducting oral
hearings and acting as an independent arbiter when a dispute about the effective exercise of
procedural rights between parties and DG Competition arises in antitrust and merger proceedings.
The Hearing Officer is mandated to adopt certain decisions, e.g. on applications to be heard by third
parties in the proceedings and on the disclosure of information whose content is claimed to be
confidential when a Commission decision is published.
There are two Hearing Officers who are assisted by a team of advisors as well as by two
colleagues in charge of secretarial and administrative support.
Further information about the role and specific tasks of the Hearing Officer is available on the
following website: http://ec.europa.eu/competition/hearing_officers/index_en.html
WE PROPOSE
The job consists of a variety of secretarial, administrative and organisational tasks. In particular,
you will be responsible for the practical steps necessary to organize and follow up on oral hearings.
Moreover, you will be assigned to individual competition cases and provide all necessary
administrative support to the Hearing Officers and their team of advisors throughout the cycle of
the cases.
The work involves liaison with a wide variety of people, including services in DG COMP, DG SCIC,
Legal Service and the Cabinet, as well as companies, law firms and representatives of the Member
States’ authorities.
In addition, you will assist the Hearing Officers in managing human resources and logistics.
The job offers autonomy and clearly defined responsibilities, while being part of a committed and
mutually helpful team. It is suitable for a degree of teleworking (while some regular presence in the
office is expected) and generally offers a good measure of compatibility with family life.
WE LOOK FOR
The ideal candidate for carrying out the above tasks should be a dynamic, thorough and well-
organised person with good organisational and interpersonal skills. S/he should also have a good
sense of initiative and responsibility, team spirit and the ability to work independently.
We expect a good command of the usual software and IT working tools used in the Commission or
the willingness to familiarise rapidly with these tools. Experience with administrative and/or legal
procedures and/or with setting up remote/hybrid meeting formats (and an interest in developing
related skills) would be welcome.
The working language in the unit is mostly English; additional languages are a plus.
