Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Main purpose of job:

To perform the duties of HMA driver at the British High Commission to a high standard displaying excellent driving skills. Be punctual, courteous and aware of the reputational importance of his Majesty’s High Commissioner to Fiji. The successful candidate must follow local traffic regulations and ensure the HMA and other VIP(s)/driver’s safety at all times.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

  • HMA’s driver should be able to check the traffic situation, e.g. by planning alternative routes to avoid traffic when needed and should check venures in advance so they know where to go on arrival.
  • Drivers shall follow the traffic law and ensure to deliver passengers safely to the right place such as all replated departments; companies; airports; train stations; hotel; bank etc at the right time: keeping speeding limits; not using the horn, obeying road mark and signals.
  • Be able to judge unfamiliar environments flexibly and take initiative to communicate with the High Commissioner or Line Manager to ensure effective collection and arrival of the High Commissioner.
  • Be able to work at a very short notice.
  • Be able to perform ad-hoc tasks set by HMA that require the use of the vehicle.
  • Learn and accumulate driving experience, work with other team members according to work requirements.

Care of vehicles

  • Ensure the car is stocked with PPE and First Aid equipment
  • Keeping the vehicle clean and serviceable, including being aware of when servicing/wheel tax are due and liaising with Line Manager to organise a suitable time for the works to be carried out
  • Daily check of tyre pressure, hydraulic fluid, oil, battery level and fuel
  • Identifying any defects as early as possible and to keep any potential risk to a minimal level. Report any fault or damage immediately to Line Manager and liaison with garage to repaint the vehicle
  • Keeping an accurate record of all journeys and submit to Line Manger on a regular basis, ensure car service and wheel tax are carried out at the appropriate times
  • Be responsible for the fines to the flag car

Other Duties

  • Keeping the car clean and presentable at all times, both inside and outside
  • Delivery of documentation to the Fiji Governmental Departments as required
  • Transfer stuff from one place to another for the High Commissioner
  • Work with Residence staff as require
  • Ad hoc duties as directed by the Line Manager

Language requirements:

Proficient in English.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Be familiar with various destinations and have a broad knowledge of travel routes and road conditions throughout and outside the Suva area
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to learn and improve
  • Some knowledge on technical/mechanical issue
  • Able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and public holidays

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Ability to undertake duties with minimal supervision

Other benefits and conditions of employment

This is a 3-year fixed term contract, which may be renewable subject to annual funding approval.

Appointment is subject to a six-month probation period and maintaining Posts security clearance requirements.

Open to Fiji citizens, permanent residents. Interstate applicants will be required to meet their own travel and relocation expenses. No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

Staff recruited locally by the High Commission are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Fiji employment law.

Working patterns:

Monday – Thursday 08:00 – 16:15, Friday 08:00 – 13:00 – this role will require overtime including evenings, weekends and public holidays.
