This Internship is located in the United Nations Team of Experts on the Rule of Law and Sexual Violence in Conflict (TOE), Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary- General on Sexual Violence in Conflict (SRSG-SVC). The TOE was created by United Nations Security Council resolution 1888 (2009) with the purpose of assisting national authorities in strengthening the rule of law, with the aim of ensuring criminal accountability for perpetrators of conflict-related sexual violence. The TOE Internship is for an initial period of three months, with an opportunity for extension up to six months, depending on the needs of the TOE. The internship is UNPAID and can be full-time or part time. Interns are required to work four to five days per week (20-35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. The work hours during internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern. To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a university degree programme (minimum bachelor”s level or equivalent) Applicants must also:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Visa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements: For internships in the United States of America, persons who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or on another non-immigrant (such as F1 or J1 visa) status, will be required to obtain a G4 visa. The selected person will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and approved employment authorization (CPT/OPT/AT), allowing them to undertake the internship.
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
