Introduction

Are you an Applied Physicist with a passion for challenging and exciting projects in the field of particle physics experiments? Then seize the opportunity and join the CERN’s Experimental Physics Department and contribute to the development and construction of the next generation of silicon trackers.

You will join:

• The Experimental Physics (EP) Department which carries out basic research in the field of experimental particle physics in a stimulating scientific atmosphere, standing as an important reference for the European physics community. It also contributes to the education and training of young scientists.
• The Detector Development (DD) section in the EP-DT (Detector Technologies) group provides expertise in various fields of detector technologies and support the development and construction of future tracking detectors.

Functions

• Coordinate the ATLAS ITk pixel detector module assembly at CERN for prototyping, pre-production and production; monitor production progress, quality and compliance with specifications of the assembled modules and coordinate together with the activity coordinators the component flow to ensure steady production.
• Be in charge of developing the module testing infrastructure, QA/QC procedures and lead the testing activities.
• Establish the assembly process in the EP-DT DSF cleanroom; coordinate work with CERN services as well as with outside suppliers and collaborators; define a work process in line with the project schedule.
• Closely interact with the teams working on integration and system testing for all module related matters; provide information to collaborating teams and report on progress in meetings.
• Coordinate and supervise physicists, engineers, technicians and students involved in the activity, provide training and define work schedules.

Qualifications

PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of semiconductor detectors for particle physics experiments.

Experience:

• Contribution to the development of new detector concepts, including development of silicon pixel detectors for upgrades.
• Experience in silicon pixel detector prototyping, i.e. assembly, testing and qualification of silicon pixel detector modules.
• Experience in planning and procurement for components of silicon tracking systems.

Would be an asset:

• Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary team and international collaboration, including physicists, engineers and technicians involved in work on module assembly.

Technical competencies:

• Knowledge and application of solid-state based particle detection technologies, in particular silicon pixel detectors for high energy particle experiments.
• Assembly and integration of detectors, in particular construction of silicon pixel detector modules.
• Testing and validation of detector, accelerator and beam line components, including electrical characterization and tests with particles of semiconductor detectors.
• Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques: for silicon pixel detectors.
• Organisation, planning and control, including supervision of students and technicians.

Language skills:

• English: ability to understand and speak the language in professional contexts, draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and make oral presentations.
• French: basic knowledge would be an asset or willingness to acquire it rapidly.

Employment Conditions

Contract type: Limited duration contract (3 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

These functions require:

• Work in Radiation Areas.
• Interventions in underground installations.
• Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
• Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
