WWF’s diversity-focused internship program, BRIDGE, aims to recruit professionals early in their careers who bring fresh thinking and innovation to the environmental and conservation sector and are well positioned to develop into the next generation of leaders. Our mission is to increase exposure of students from underrepresented populations to conservation and environmental careers, provide professional development opportunities, reduce the barriers to attracting a diverse pool of internship candidates, and develop a pipeline for future WWF hires from underrepresented populations.


Position Summary


This internship will provide an opportunity for an undergraduate intern to support internal needs and programmatic goals as it relates to maritime shipping in the Arctic. We’re looking for candidates who are passionate about conservation and communities and who have experience interacting or working with Indigenous peoples and local communities in Alaska. Must be a responsible self-starter and be able to work in collaboration with other team members as well as external partners.


Internship Description:


  • Performs research, writing, and analysis of topics related to area-based conservation and maritime shipping in the Arctic, closely with colleagues and external experts.
  • Assists team members with outreach and community engagement.
  • Supports communications needs with guidance from team members.
  • Support communications platforms as needed.
  • Supports internal and external knowledge sharing and learning to promote collaboration across teams and organizations.
  • Perform other duties as needed.


Minimum Requirements:


  • Must be an actively enrolled student and not received degree at time of internship start date.
  • Pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s program.
  • Interest in the intersections of conservation, Indigenous peoples and local communities, and maritime shipping in the Arctic.
  • Solutions-oriented and proactive in creative critical thinking.
  • Strong relational skills with a willingness to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Strong research, writing, editing, and proofreading skills guided by attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Familiarity, experience, and/or meaningful connection with the culture of Indigenous peoples and local communities in Alaska.


Learning Outcomes


  • Knowledge of area-based conservation approaches in Alaska.
  • Knowledge of maritime shipping topics and a familiarity of the potential risks to people and wildlife.
  • Increased ability to operate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Deeper understanding of Indigenous peoples and local communities in Alaska.


WWF interns will be provided a set of professional development opportunities, aimed at increasing their exposure to conservation and sustainability careers. This includes:


  • Development discussions with their manager;
  • Up to two online courses through Cornell University’s eCornell program;
  • Speed mentoring with different WWF teams;
  • Opportunity to present their work to intern peers and WWF staff;
  • Session on resume and interviewing best practices.


Interns will also have access to an array of networking opportunities. This includes meetings with WWF’s CEO, the senior management team, Employee Resource Groups, and representatives from other departments.






Paid – $17 per hour (full-time, 35 hours per week)


Internship Dates:

Internship will run from June 5, 2023 to August 11, 2023
