Position Title:               Communications Director

REPORTS TO:                     Executive Director, American Carbon Registry

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications Director is senior position within the American Carbon Registry (ACR), responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive ACR communications strategy.  ACR’s technical work spans multiple markets – ICAO, California and global non-compliance (voluntary) – as well as multiple sectors – forestry, methane, refrigerants and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The ACR Communications strategy will ensure consistent overall messaging in addition to content tailored for these different markets, sectors and target audiences.

 

The Director will oversee the development of multi-use content for and manage ACR’s owned media (including the ACR website, listserve and social media accounts) channels in addition to serving as the key point of contact for media enquiries as well as with ACR’s external communications team and Winrock’s communications team.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development and implementation of ACR’s communication strategy and brand identity, including ensuring consistent messaging / content across sectors and target audiences
  • Manage communications, including website and social media content, newsletters and blog posts, and the development of compelling print collateral and press releases
  • Manage ACR’s media presence, including cultivating relationships with reporters and other media outlets, collaborating with staff and external communications support to write and place Op-eds, and responding strategically to news articles and reporter enquiries
  • Manage ongoing relationships with communications contractors, including design and web maintenance
  • Ensure market engagement with ACR’s rebrand with ongoing strategic messaging and collaboration with existing and new audiences
  • Work with relevant staff and partners, as appropriate, to develop brand identities for new ERT product and service offerings
  • Work with staff to improve their communications, including developing and running in-house workshops, assisting staff with outward-facing projects such as presentations, and identifying potential presentation opportunities
  • Oversee the registration and use of ACR trademarks.

QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND

 

Education:          Relevant degree in communications or related field.

 

Experience:        The candidate must have at least 10 years of communications experience including developing and implementing communications strategies, writing / reporting, engagement with reporters and media, messaging and content development for a variety of audiences as well as extensive climate change knowledge and experience including the Paris Agreement, U.S. and international carbon markets – compliance and voluntary – as well as with key stakeholders including press and media, NGOs and civil society and the carbon market industry in general.

 

Skills:                   

  • Strong writing, editing and speaking / presentation skills; an eye for detail
  • The ability to articulate complex concepts and tailor messaging to multiple audiences with varying degrees of technical knowledge
  • Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to oversee contractors / consultants as well as to work independently, be persistent, and juggle multiple, sometimes competing priorities
  • Experience with graphic design, digital media, technical writing, online media and PR management systems, and marketing
  • Ability to consistently interact with others in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner, maintain a positive attitude and good working relationships, and work effectively in a team setting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, impeccable integrity and trustworthiness, sense of humor, and diplomatic approach to problem solving.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Fluency in one or more additional languages is an asset.

 

Other:                  Must be available to travel for short-term assignments. Commitment to Winrock’s mission and interest in market-based approaches to reducing GHG emissions required.
