OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

The Cabinet of the Director-General is established with the aim to support the Director-General and her Advisors in defining strategic orientations and managing institutional relations, including in the field of education, in liaison with UNESCO’s Education Sector. This work will also contribute to ensuring UNESCO’s mandate as lead United Nations agency on the Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Education.

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Staff and the direct supervision of the Education Advisor in the Cabinet of the Director-General, the incumbent is responsible for providing professional and technical support to the Cabinet’s education-related work.

In this context, the incumbent will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Review and analyze requests, incoming and outgoing documents and reports, identifying in these documents critical elements that should be highlighted for the attention of the Education Advisor in the Cabinet of the Director-General; obtaining additional information or clarification when necessary; preparing recommendations for the Advisor’s consideration.
  • Support the Education Advisor in carrying out research and consultations in preparation of meetings of the Director-General with personalities in domains related to education, and ensure that proper follow-up actions are taken by Programme Sectors and Services.
  • Support the Education Advisor in reviewing documents and briefing notes on education-related topics, including for submission to UNESCO’s Governing Bodies.
  • Provide input to the Education Advisor for the Director-General’s public statements and communications on education.
  • Liaise with the Education Sector to ensure relevant and efficient exchange of information.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in the fields of education or social sciences.

 

Work Experience

  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience in the fields of international relations and education.
  • Experience at the international level.
  • Experience in providing advice to Senior Management.

 

Skills/Competencies

  • Sense of diplomacy and integrity.
  • Good understanding of the United Nations system, international relations and geopolitics.
  • Capacity to deal with sensitive topics and keep information confidential.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Capacity to work in, and adapt to, multicultural environments.
  • Ability to effectively manage competing deadlines.

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge (written and spoken) of English and French.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Work Experience

  • Experience in institutional relations and protocol.
  • Experience in intergovernmental organisations.

Skills/Competencies

  • Very good knowledge of the work and programmes of UNESCO’s Education Sector.
  • Knowledge of other fields of work of UNESCO (culture, information, sciences).

Languages

  • Knowledge of other official UNESCO languages (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and/or Spanish).

UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc.

The approximate annual starting salary for this post is 76 976 US $.
